Good News is welcomed by most folks. Please allow me to take a couple of minutes to share with you some Good News that changed my life, my outlook, and my hopes for the future. Let’s begin by saying there is no charge for this Good News. It is absolutely free! Not only that, but even if you were rich you could not pay for it! That’s because the Good News is a GIFT!
The GIFT I am talking about is the gift of eternal life. God offers a GIFT to you and me. That GIFT is forgiveness of our sins and the promise of heaven for all eternity. This gift cannot be earned, it must be received. You and I could never be “good” enough to earn this gift. That’s why God offers it to us as a GIFT!
Now, here’s the Good News: this gift is available to you! I know because I have accepted God’s gift and it has made all the difference in the world. I am not perfect, but I know that my sins have been forgiven. I know that when I die I will go to Heaven, because I have God’s Word on it! I have a life that has a real purpose! It centers around my relationship with God, my gratitude towards Him, and my desire to honor Him with my life. Believe me, it is better than just trying to make it from one day to the next and wondering if my life has actually accomplished anything.
So please allow me to briefly explain to you how you can have God’s gift.
1. You have to recognize that you have sinned against God and that you need Him to forgive you and make you a part of His family.
Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” The word “all” means you and me. We have sinned. We have gone against God’s Word, done things He has told us not to do, and not done things we are supposed to do.
2. You must know that there is a penalty for our sin.
Because we have sinned against God we deserve death and Hell. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” A wage is something we have earned or deserve. The Bible speaks of two kinds of death: physical death, when our heart quits beating, and the “second death” which is the Lake of Fire (Hell). The penalty for our sins must be paid!
3. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins.
You see, Jesus died on the cross and paid the wages for our sins. He suffered all the pains of Hell as He suffered on that cross. He did it for you and me, even though we do not deserve it!
John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
4. You must accept what Jesus did on the cross by faith and call on Him to forgive you and save you.
Note that the verse above said, “that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Many times in the Gospels we are told to “believe.” Believing is more than knowing the facts. It is trusting, relying on someone or some thing. To believe on the Lord Jesus is to trust that what He did on the cross would pay for your sins and that He would forgive you and save you if you ask Him to. Let’s get this straight: you can’t take you to Heaven, but Jesus can!
We are told in Romans 10:9 and 10 to “confess with thy mouth” and “believe in thine heart.” God wants us to confess (that means to agree with God) that we are sinners and that we need His forgiveness. And He wants us to believe, to trust that His death on the cross is enough to get us to Heaven. If anything else could accomplish that, what a waste the death of Christ would be!
God then says, that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
You can call upon the Lord by praying a simple prayer and asking the Lord to save you. If you are not sure what to say, then simply tell the Lord that you recognize that you are a sinner and that you know that what you deserve is death and Hell. Ask the Lord to forgive you and tell Him that you are trusting Him alone to get you to Heaven. Remember, prayer is simply talking to God. He’s not interested in how many fancy words you use. He’s looking at what’s on your heart!
I did this and that’s why I’ve given you this little tract. I really want you to have the same wonderful joy that I have had in my life ever since I asked the Lord to save me. If you prayed and asked the Lord Jesus to save you or if you have any questions, please let me know at the address on this tract.
Thank you for reading about this wonderful Good News! —David T. Smith
