The Bible teaches us that God created Adam, the very first man. Adam had a favorable disposition with God until he disobeyed God’s command. Through his disobedience, sin entered the world and death through sin. Thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. (Romans 5:12). Sin is disobeying God in thought, word, or deed.

Sin brought spiritual death as well as physical death. Spiritual death is conscious existence of the soul separated from God. Because of Adam’s disobedience, we are born spiritually dead, separated from God. We do not have true life.

“For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.” Ecclesiastes 7:20

Because God is holy and just, God brings judgment against the sinner who rejects Jesus Christ. “These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:9) “He who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).

That’s the BAD NEWS! But the GOOD NEWS is that JESUS CHRIST came into the world to save sinners! (1 Timothy 1:15)

The Bible says that “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once” (1 Corinthians 15:3-6).

Jesus, the God-Man, took upon Himself the penalty that we deserved for sin by dying on the cross. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Three days later He arose from the dead.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12

Trying to live a good life, giving to charities, going to church, baptism, or any other type of human merit cannot take away your sins and give you eternal life. They may be good things to do, but those things cannot deliver you from the penalty of sin and unbelief. Nor can they earn you favor with God.

So what do I do to receive Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and the free gift of eternal life?

1. Simply agree with God that what He says about you is true; that you are a condemned sinner in need of a Savior (Romans 3:23; 6:23).

2. Believe that Jesus Christ came as God in the flesh; fully Man and fully God. (John 1:1,14; 8:24; 8:58; 10:30).

3. Believe (trust) that Jesus Christ bore the punishment for your sins on the cross, was buried, and then rose bodily from the dead on the third day. Trust in Him alone to save you. “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” Acts 16:31

If you have genuinely trusted solely in Jesus Christ to save you, then realize that according to His word you have passed from death to life and have been reconciled to God (John 5:24;
2 Corinthians 5:18). You are no longer spiritually dead and under judgment for sin, but now you have eternal life … true life! “He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:11).

What to do next?

Mature in your relationship with God through studying and meditating on His word, the Bible. “Direct my steps by Your word” (Psalm 119:133). Seek the Lord in prayer and find a Bible believing church that can help you “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). As you learn to walk in the Spirit, He will help you to become the fruitful and functional person He intended you to be (Galatians 5:16,22).
