Are You A “Real” Sports Fan?

To find out, answer the following questions:

Are you so anxious that you lose sleep during the week before the next game or event?

Do you keep track of stats and let everyone know, even taking the time to share that info with the greeter at Walmart?

Do you have a room in your home or office at work decorated with sports memorabilia of your favorite team or individual?

Would you give up the use of your cell phone for an entire year in exchange for season tickets with the best seats in the house?

There are 8,000 sports in the world today. Individuals and teams compete with one another for the sake of being the best in their field of play for our entertainment. Recognition, fame, and fortune usually follow those who are successful in their respective sport. Unfortunately, our culture fails to realize that yesterday’s heroes of the game are today’s forgotten people. And a hundred years from now, it won’t matter whether your team won or lost today.

But what will matter is where you will spend eternity when you take your last physical breath! The Bible says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). So, how will you do on that day? Are you a good person? If you were to compare yourself with Adolph Hitler’s life, you would no doubt probably look like a saint. But, according to the Bible, comparing ourselves with others is not going to be the standard of how we’re going to be judged. God is just and will judge the world in righteousness using His moral law.

Have you ever told a lie or stolen something that didn’t belong to you, regardless of the value? If you have, you would be considered a liar and a thief.

Do you have more passion for your Kids? Grandkids? Career? Hobby? Money? Favorite sports team? … than God Himself? That’s called idolatry.

Ever hated anyone? The Bible says, “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 John 3:15).

If you were truly honest here, you’re not a good person. You are guilty before God, just like the rest of us. But you may say, “Big deal” or “Who cares”.

Well … God cares! Your eternal destination is at stake here and if you die in your sins, you will go to an awful place called hell—separated from God’s goodness and loving-kindness for all of eternity.

But it doesn’t have to be that way, my friend! Jesus said, “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them” (Luke 9:56). Listen, God has done all that is necessary for us to be forgiven, redeemed, cleansed, and made fit for heaven. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bear the punishment our sins deserve. Jesus then rose from the grave and offers eternal life to all who receive Him. All that remains is for you and I to recognize just how sinful we are and call out to God for help.

This involves humbling ourselves, turning from our sins to God (Acts 20:21). And then putting our faith in the Savior (Jesus Christ)—as if you’d put your trust in a parachute if you had to jump out of an airplane that is about to crash. When you do that, the Bible says that God will forgive every sin that you’ve ever committed and grant you the gift of everlasting life (Romans 10:9-10). That’s the good news. That’s the Gospel!

So, if you’re going to be watching a sporting event sometime soon with family or friends … have fun and be safe. And please consider what was shared with you, for you may not have tomorrow.
