What is hope?

According to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary it is: “Confidence in a future event; the highest degree of well founded expectation of good; as a hope founded on God’s gracious promises.”

Is hope just for the here and now?

“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead” (1 Corinthians 15:19-20a). “For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?” (Romans 8:24).

Why do we need hope?

Because people struggle with many perplexing things. “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord” (Psalms 31:24). “For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever” (Psalms 9:18). “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me?” (Psalms 43:5a).

Where can we find hope?

“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel” (Colossians 1:5). “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

God is a God of hope.

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost” (Romans 15:13).

True hope comes from God

“Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17).

Jesus is our hope

“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope” (1 Timothy 1:1).

Hope in Christ is an anchor of the soul

“That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever” (Hebrews 6:18-20).

Hope looks beyond our problems
to our Redeemer.

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).

Jesus solved our biggest problem (sin), He can handle our smaller ones! “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2).
