When I was around 7 years old my parents got a divorce. I was not raised in any sort of religious home, and growing up I always felt an emptiness that I could not get rid of. Then I turned to drugs and girls and by the time I was 17 I was doing drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, and LSD; I was your typical hippie drug addict. I used to steal money from my family to support my habits: I would go and break into cars and steal stuff, and I would steal alcohol from my mom. I really believed that I was destined to be a failure and a screw up no matter what I did.

There were times where I would sit up at night and say to myself, “you’ll be a drug addict forever.” During my Junior year of high school I became addicted to over the counter cough medicine. I would go to school high on drugs, sometimes being high for several days in a row. There was a time in my life where I was on drugs and had a pistol in my mouth about to pull the trigger. I was once in a mental psych ward for a few weeks. On another occasion I went into psychosis on LSD and I tried to take a police officer’s gun and shoot myself—that night I ended up in a hospital strapped to a bed. My life was spiraling out of control because of sin. The drugs and the sexual relations I was having with women were not fulfilling me.

John 4:13-14 esus answered and said unto her [a woman at a well drawing water], Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 e that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

Ecclesiastes 2:11 hen I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

No matter how much money, drugs, sex, or pleasure we have from the things of this world, they will never satisfy us, and they always leave us empty and wanting more. I came to personally learn this through my wicked, sinful lifestyle. This emptiness is what lead me to a Baptist church, where I heard the message of Jesus Christ. I prayed and asked Jesus Christ to forgive me of my sins and to save me from them—and He changed my life.

2 Corinthians 5:17 herefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Jesus changed my life in a radical way. Today I am no longer addicted to drugs and I now have a freedom from sin and a peace in my heart that cannot be described with words. God has been so good to me!

Allow me to share with you the message that changed my life:

The first thing I would like to do is go through some of the Ten Commandments with you. These commandments are known as the law of God, and as we go through these I would like to ask you to examine yourself honestly. Keep these verses in mind:

Ezekiel 18:20 he soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Romans 6:23 or the wages of sin is death.

1 John 3:4 hosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

According to these verses the Bible says that the soul that sins (breaks God’s law) shall die. Just like a criminal who steals and breaks the law must be punished, so there is also a punishment for breaking God’s law. This is what many people would refer to as Hell or the Lake of Fire.

Now let’s look at some of the Ten Commandments (God’s law):

Exodus 20:3 hou shalt have no other gods before me.

Simply put, this commandment means that nothing in our life is to be more important to us than God; nothing should take the place of God in our lives. Many people do this with money, sex, drugs, friends, family, etc. For me it was sex and drugs. Whatever has the biggest priority in your life is your “god”.

Exodus 20:4 hou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

This verse is talking about making false gods (statues) out of wood, stone, metal, etc.

Even though most people don’t make stone idols today, many people do this very same thing by inventing a god to suit themselves. For example, a homosexual creates his idea of a god that does not think homosexuality is a sin, and a drug addict creates his own idea of a god who doesn’t views illegal drugs as a sin. Many times people create a god who does not punish people in a place called Hell, or they create a god who views sex outside of marriage as being acceptable.

Exodus 20:8 emember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Basically this commandment says to give God one day of our week. This is done today by going to a church. How many times have you not gone to a church because of something else like a sports game, or because you just did not want to get out of bed.

Exodus 20:12 onor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Have you always obeyed your dad and mom? But let’s take it even a step further, have you always obeyed with a good attitude? We can outwardly obey while inwardly dishonoring. Have you ever dishonored your parents in any way?

Exodus 20:13 hou shalt not kill.

This is the one where everyone feels good about themselves: but do you know that the bible says if you have hatred in your heart towards someone that you have committed murder? Have you ever hated anyone?

Exodus 20:14 hou shalt not commit adultery.

Adultery is when we have sex with someone else’s spouse, but Jesus said if you look on someone to lust after them, that you have committed adultery in your heart. Have you ever looked on someone you were not married to and had lust in your heart?

Exodus 20:15 hou shalt not steal.

Have you ever stolen anything? Even one time?

Exodus 20:16 hou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Have you told a lie? Did you know it only takes one lie for you to become a liar? It only takes one murder for someone to become a murderer. Keep the following verse in mind:

Revelation 21:8 ut the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

So if you died today and stood before God would you be innocent or guilty? But before you answer that question keep this verse in mind:

James 2:10 or whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend [or break] in one point, he is guilty of all.

Just like it only takes one broken link to ruin a chain, God looks at one little lie as you breaking all of His commandments. Many of us would say that Adolf Hitler is guilty before God and worthy of Hell because of the millions of people he murdered. But if you only told one lie, you are just as guilty before God as Hitler! God does not look at sin the way we do; ALL sins are a SERIOUS thing in the eyes of a perfectly holy God. So would you be innocent or guilty?

The answer is that you are going to be guilty. In fact, this is the whole point of the Ten Commandments (God’s law).

Romans 3:19-20 ow we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The purpose of the Ten Commandments is not so you can try and earn or work your way to heaven. They are to show you that you are a sinner who is guilty before God, so that you can come to Jesus Christ and find forgiveness.

Galatians 3:24 herefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

So, you are guilty before God. Now, will you go to Heaven or Hell?

This is where some people get tripped up, thinking that God is too loving to send anyone to Hell. But just like a murderer must be punished by a just judge even though the judge is loving, so a just God must punish wicked sin. Some people also think that by doing good works like going to church or giving money to charity or by “trying to be good” that these things will make up for sin. Imagine if a murderer stood before a judge and said, “judge I know I’ve broken the law but I fed a homeless guy and went to a PTA meeting.” The judge will tell him that it’s good to do those things but he broke the law and must pay the penalty.

Ephesians 2:8-9 or by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Isaiah 64:6 ut we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Guilty sinners will go to Hell. Hell is described as place of literal burning fire, conscious torment, and a place of no second chances. This is where you will go for your sins.

Here’s the good news!

John 3:16 or God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God loved you so much that he sent Jesus Christ to come and die on the cross for your sins. Christ took the punishment for our sins on the cross.

2 Corinthians 5:21 or he hath made him [Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [Christ].

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So the penalty of sin is death in Hell, but God has offered us the free gift of eternal life. How do we get this gift?

Acts 16:31 elieve on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

John 3:16-18 or God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 e that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 6:40 nd this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:47 erily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

John 10:7-9 hen said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

John 11:25-26 esus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

We must believe on Jesus. In today’s world, believing in God means believing he exists, but this is not what it means to believe on Jesus in the Bible. To believe in someone means to trust their abilities or their character. For example, If I said I believe in you to pick me up from school, it would mean I have faith in your abilities. In the same way, we must depend on or have faith or believe in Jesus and his ability to save us. This is another reason why good works or being religious cannot save us, because we must have faith in Jesus’ ability and not our own. If you are depending upon your own goodness to save you, then by definition you are not believing on Jesus!

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Good works like Baptism, Church Membership, keeping the commandments, etc. cannot save us and take away our sins, because our righteousness (our good works) are like filthy rags in God’s sight!

Consider the prayer of the publican from earlier: “be merciful to me a sinner.” Cast yourself at the feet of Jesus today and he will save you. We are saved by trusting in Christ alone to save us. He alone can take us to heaven.

John 14:6 esus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

You can pray something like the following prayer. To be clear: it’s not the prayer that saves you, though, it’s your trusting in Christ. Getting saved is a one time thing—not a process. Today, if you pray this sincerely from your heart and mean the words, you shall be saved according to Romans 10:13. Calling upon Jesus is not dependent upon the exact words of a prayer. There are many different ways for a drowning person to call out to a life guard to save them; what brings salvation is the act of calling out to the lifeguard. You are drowning in sin, and Jesus is the lifeguard.

“Dear Jesus I know I am a sinner, please forgive me and please save me, Amen”

Perhaps you have decided not to receive Christ, or you have decided to put it off and do it later. Consider these warnings from scripture:

James 4:14 hereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Proverbs 27:1 oast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Life is short like a vapor, and it appears for a short time, we are also not guaranteed tomorrow, if you say no right now, you may die tonight and end up in Hell, What if tonight you lay down your head on your pillow and tomorrow never comes? What if this is God’s last chance for you to be saved? Please do not put off salvation.

Hebrews 3:15 hile it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

2 Corinthians 6:2 For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
