A Roadmap For Analyzing AI

  1. AI as manmade
Man is powerfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), able to create in stunning ways. Thus, man has created AI because he is an image-bearer of God (Genesis 1:26, 27). So, man was given both a mind and a body to do great works. Additionally, man possesses the breath of life from God (Genesis 2:7). AI is neither a living entity, nor an image-bearer of God, and it does not possess the breath of life.
  2. AI as part of fulfilling man’s mission
God gave man a guiding purpose, called “the cultural mandate,” to subdue and fill the earth (Genesis 1:28). As with most technology, when used rightly, AI can be a part of fulfilling this mandate.
  3. AI as an autonomous quest for wisdom
In the Garden of Eden, God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16, 17) as a test for man’s obedience. Man wrongly took from the tree in a quest to gain autonomous wisdom, without God, and against God. AI can often be used in a similar sinful way.
  4. AI as part of Satan’s deception
In the Garden of Eden, the serpent deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-5). AI can also be used by Satan to deceive. Beware of what you see and hear. Test everything against Scripture.
  5. AI as a modern Tower of Babel
At the Tower of Babel, man sought to reach the heavens, so as to make a name for himself (Genesis 11:4). AI could easily become a modern Tower of Babel, man’s foolish attempt to soar to great heights in defiance of God.
  6. AI as an idol
Just as the Israelites raised up a golden calf in the desert as a false god (Exodus 32:1-25), so too, AI can easily become a false god, a perceived savior to man’s troubles and suffering.
  7. Discerning AI’s value
The Apostle Paul wrote that everything is permitted, but not everything is edifying (1 Corinthians 10:23). Christians must be discerning in how they use AI. In what ways does AI lead one closer to Christ, or further from him?
  8. AI as false counsel
Today, AI is often used for counseling. This poses a serious danger since it is only built on hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on the basic principles of this world, rather than on Christ (Colossians 2:8,9). Only seek wise counselors, those who base their advice solely on God’s Word.
  9. AI as imitating God
Revelation 13:15 speaks of the image of the beast, which was given breath to deceive the world. AI can be used to instate tyranny throughout the world, and may even lead many Christians astray.
  10. The New Heavens and the New Earth
Christians look forward to the creation being renewed at the end of time (Revelation 21:1-5). AI cannot thwart God’s ultimate purpose to renew the creation, and to dwell forever with his people. If you are in Christ, your future is secure.

You might herald AI as a savior, or you might live in terror of its potential. If you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, you are given the power to do neither.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

The most important goal of anyone’s life is to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, one fully obedient to him. To become a disciple, study God’s Word, and attend a biblically-sound church.
