Have you ever felt like the man on the cover? Like you’ve been put into a situation with no way out? I have, and let me tell you—there is a way out! What allows us to conquer obstacles and do what seems impossible? Is it self-esteem or positive thinking or hard work? No, it is faith—faith in God and what He says. Solomon, called “the wisest man that ever lived,” knew this. He said, “Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5).
There are many times in life when we may feel like we’re stranded on a narrow ledge with no way out. Problems at home, school or work, fights with friends or family, financial or health troubles—all these can leave us feeling stranded. But do you realize that you face an even greater problem? God has declared that “There is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” and that “the wages of sin is death” and “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:27). This means that whether you sin a little or a lot, God says that you are facing eternal death and judgment. Sin is so serious to God because His holiness cannot allow sin to be in His presence.
Many people have realized that their sin has separated them from God and have tried to fix the problem by themselves. This would be like the man on the cover trying to climb down by himself. Without the proper help and equipment, he would most certainly die while trying. It is the same with those who try to save themselves from sin. The Bible says, “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9). If you try to save yourself, rejecting God’s salvation through faith, you will perish in your sins.
There are others who see their sins and decide that it’s not really a problem—that things will just work out somehow. If our stranded man took that approach, he would die of dehydration or exposure. So it is with your soul. You cannot just “wait and see.” You must deal with God about your sin now. The Bible says, “He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already” (John 3:18). “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).
So what is the answer? It is FAITH. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). The Bible says that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). This means that faith takes things that you can’t physically see or do and makes them both knowable and possible! Faith in God goes beyond believing that He might exist or does exist, and lets you know that He exists and know that you are saved through Christ’s death and resurrection.
Now we come to the issue: how can you get this faith in God? The Bible says, “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” God’s Word says you are a sinner and that Jesus is the only way of salvation. Open your heart and hear what Jesus says to you: “He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). Do you hear God speaking to you about your soul? He loves you so much that He has already laid the judgment for your sin on His only Son, Jesus. Come to Him, confessing your sin and trusting the work that Jesus has done to be your Saviour.
God has offered you a way out of the problem of your sin. Do not refuse it. By faith, accept His offer of forgiveness and eternal salvation today. “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him” (Hebrews 2:3).
Faith recognizes the love and power of God and, with the simplicity of a child, quietly places its hand in His.
