God is good.

The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD (Psalm 33:5b).

Everything good comes from God. Sunlight, warmth, beauty, life, love, and laughter all come from Him. To live with God forever is to be with the source of all goodness forever.

Humans choose evil over good.

For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood (Prov 1:16).

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one . . . For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Rom 3:10,23).

Despite God’s goodness to us, we rebel against Him by choosing to do evil. (This is called sin.) Have you ever told a lie or stolen anything? Have you ever hated anyone? Have you ever looked at someone with lust (sexual desire)? To do so is to rebel against the King of the universe.

All will give account to God one day.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil (Eccles 12:14).

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him (John 3:36).

Each of us will stand before God one day and give account of our life. No one will be without guilt. Imagine how a soldier would be in trouble for disobeying a sergeant but in much greater trouble for disobeying a general. Breaking the law of God, the eternal King of the universe, is the most serious offense of all. Those who violate His law (we are all guilty) will be punished by eternal suffering in hell, with no second chance.

“But I can repent.”

“Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants” (Luke 15:18b-19).

“… repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21b).

Imagine a criminal standing before a judge, saying, “Yeah, I killed the guy, but I repent.” Will the judge let him go? Thinking “I can escape God’s judgment if I live a more worthy life” is a way of trusting in self. True repentance means recognizing myself as unworthy before God and trusting in (having faith in) Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness.

Jesus Christ is the way.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth… all things were created by him, and for him (Col 1:16).

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6).

Jesus is the one true God, the eternal, self-existent Creator who was always God before the universe began. He alone created everything that exists. God became a man, Jesus of Nazareth. He lived a perfect life, always did good, and never did evil. He laid down His life and suffered in your place on the cross. He took the wrath of God for you, not as your example, but as your substitute. He then rose from the dead, defeated death, and lives forever.

The Free Gift.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom 6:23).

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph 2:8-9).

We have all failed to meet God’s standard of goodness and face eternal punishment for breaking His law. Yet because of the sacrifice of Jesus, God offers the free gift of eternal life with Him. Grace means receiving a gift you do not deserve.

Jesus Christ is sufficient for you to reach the Father.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree (1 Peter 2:24a).

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness (Rom 4:5).

Humans believe God will accept them if they try hard enough, but God accepts only the work of Jesus on the cross. If you gave someone a birthday gift and they tried to pay you for it, you would feel offended. Likewise, trying to live a better life to show God how good you are is offensive to Him. Jesus plus good works will not save you; God justifies (declares righteous) those who trust in Jesus alone. And faith is not a work; it means trusting what Jesus did for you.

What must I do to be saved?

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us (Titus 3:5a).

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God (1 John 5:13).

Receiving the free gift of God means you give up trying to be worthy before God through good works and religious deeds. You admit that you are hopelessly lost and trust completely in Jesus Christ alone. When you do, God will grant you the free gift — your sins will be forgiven, you will receive eternal life, and you will live with God forever.
