Many people have a passport to travel, and without a passport you cannot travel freely to some foreign countries. This is true for anyone who wants to be in heaven someday. You can never enter heaven unless you have what is required to enter God’s holy and eternal dwelling place. Because God is holy, and hates all sin, He cannot accept anyone into heaven who is defiled by sin. That should make us pause and consider if we are fit to enter into heaven, for all of us must admit that we have sinned.

If we just look at God’s commandments, which include not lying, not stealing, not committing adultery, and honoring our parents, we would all have to admit at some point we have failed to keep God’s righteous standards, and are guilty sinners. If you are not sure about whether you have sinned, let me help you understand what God says about your sin. He said, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23 KJV). That means each one of us is guilty before God. No one can claim to be sinless and ready to enter into heaven on their own.

Some people have been convinced that if they do some good things, like going to church, reading the bible, praying, and helping others, it can earn them a place in heaven. The problem is that none of our good works can take away the guilt of our sin. The Bible teaches that salvation is based on our faith, and not our good works. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9 NKJV).

If you want to go to heaven, God has provided a way for you to be accepted. You need to have your sins forgiven, and washed away, so you can be accepted as a citizen of heaven. When people want to travel to a foreign land, they would be restricted if they had a criminal record. The same is true about going to heaven, for we cannot enter heaven with all of our sins. So, God sent Jesus, the Son of God, to die in our place, and receive our punishment for sin. “Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24 NKJV). By recognizing our sinfulness before God, and accepting Jesus’ sacrifice as payment for our sins, we can have our sins forgiven. Salvation is actually very simple. The Bible says we must place our trust in Jesus Christ as Lord. “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9 ESV).

Do you want to enter heaven? Then take this opportunity to apply for your passport. Accept the free gift of salvation that God offers you through His Son. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31 NKJV). You may ask Jesus to give you this salvation through prayer right now. You could use the following prayer to help you, but be sure the words are sincere from your own heart.

Prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner, and I am guilty and deserve your judgment. I want to be saved and come to heaven, so please forgive my sins, and come into my life as my Lord and Savior. Help me from this day forward to live in faith and obedience. Thank you for giving your life for me, Amen.”
