Are You Trusting That You Are a Good Person?
Many think they are good enough to go to Heaven. They think God wouldn’t possibly send them to Hell—they’re just good people. Many trust in religion. They try to bury their fear of death in their faithful church attendance, charity, or good deeds for others.
But compared to a holy God, not only is our sin filthy, but our good works are filthy as well. That’s how holy God is. By being born into this world, we have inherited a sin nature. Even if we were to somehow keep the commandments of God, we can’t get rid of our sin nature.
Those who think that God would somehow allow them into Heaven because of their good works have constructed their own god in their mind. Our opinions do not change reality. The fact is that we are born into sin, and we are all in need of a Saviour.
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” —Isaiah 64:6
“ 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” —Matthew 7:22–23
Are You Trusting That You’ve Said the Right Prayer?
If we could only see how filthy even our good works are, then it would be easier for us to understand that our words will never be good enough for a holy God either. When the prophet Isaiah saw the holiness of God, he said, “...Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips...” (Isaiah 6:5).
Many in this world today fear Hell or are at least concerned about life after death. Out of fear, obligation, or pressure, they will gladly say whatever prayer they can find to get themselves into Heaven. Sadly, many preachers lead people into thinking that if they just repeat a prayer, then that would somehow be enough to get them saved.
In the Bible, we read of how there were many lost religious people in Isaiah’s time who prayed prayers that God refused to hear. Why? They didn’t want God as their Lord. They wanted fire insurance. They wanted to keep their sin and feel “peace” through religion. But they still wanted to be in charge of their own life and live life as they pleased. They had no desire to submit to the Lord.
“And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.” —Isaiah 1:15
Are You Trusting That You’ve Repented Enough?
Do you remember every single sin that you’ve ever sinned? No one does! But many think that if they feel sorry enough about their sin, then that is enough to get to Heaven. Feeling sorry about your sin is a good thing. It’s called guilt. And we are all guilty! James 2:10 says, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” But there is no way you could possibly remember and confess every sin you’ve ever committed.
We should feel sorrow over our sin, yes. As we understand more about how that it was our sin that Jesus died for, it should grip out hearts in sorrow. But we need more than just a reformation. Jesus requires a regeneration— “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).
The good news is that, when Jesus died for your sins, He died for ALL of your sin—Past, Present, and Future! True repentance is not just feeling sorry about sin. And it’s not just going to a confession to somehow pay for our sin. These things can give us a false peace. True repentance is a change of mind. How we view sin, how we view the works we were once trusting in, and how we view God must all be aligned with God’s Word. Our opinions don’t matter one bit.
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” —1 Peter 2:24
Are You Trusting That You’ve Had a Spiritual Feeling or Experience?
When people are asked, “How do you know you’ll go to Heaven when you die?” many respond by pointing to their baptism, or to some spiritual experience they’ve had, or some emotions they experienced. What if the Devil deceived you with that spiritual experience? After all, the Devil is right now deceiving the whole world (Revelation 12:9). There is such a thing as a false peace that many trust in. As soon as fear rises up concerning their lost condition, they will point themselves to an experience to rest in.
Dear reader, there are all kinds of spiritual experiences and feelings that deceive people into Hell. But our hearts are simply not to be trusted.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” —Jeremiah 17:9
Now, the Bible is clear that God doesn’t want anyone to go to Hell. In 2 Peter 3:9, we read that God is “...not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Don’t you think that God would provide a more solid foundation than our wavering feelings for us to trust in?
So What Should You Trust In? What Will Satisfy God’s Wrath?
ONLY the Finished Work of Jesus Christ.
Our Work is not good enough. Our Religion is not good enough. Our Words are not good enough. Our Feelings are not good enough. And God makes it clear in His Word what IS good enough! It’s the Work of Christ! The Devil is right now trying his best to hide this simple answer to man’s need. 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
But the Bible is God’s Message to us. His whole Message points to Jesus Christ. Listen to what the Bible says about the Work of Jesus Christ:
Jesus, God in Human Flesh (Matthew 1:23), lived a perfect, sinless life on earth (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus died for our sin. The only way to pay for our sin is to die. “For the wages of sin is death....” (Romans 6:23). But Jesus died that death for us so we wouldn’t have to die. JESUS paid those wages! “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
When Jesus died on the cross, He became our Sacrifice. His death completely satisfied the wrath of God. The Bible word for this satisfaction of wrath is “propitiation.” 1 John 2:2 says, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
After Jesus gave His life on the cross for us, He was buried in a tomb for three days and three nights. Not only does this burial testify for us that He truly tasted death for all men, but it also testifies that our sin has truly been dealt with on the cross. “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” (Colossians 2:14).
Jesus rose from the grave, victorious over Death and Hell. He is living right now! His resurrection testifies that God is completely satisfied with the Work of Christ. And if God is satisfied with the Finished Work of Christ, we should be too. Our precious Lord is willing to save “whosoever believeth in Him” (John 3:16).
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” —Romans 6:23
So How Do You Trust that Jesus Is Enough?
1. See that you are lost, a sinner who deserves the wrath of God (Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:10, 23).
2. See that Jesus Christ died for your sin and paid the penalty for your sin in full (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18).
3. See that this Sacrifice that Jesus offered of Himself fully satisfied the wrath of God (Isaiah 53:11; 1 John 2:2; 4:10).
4. Abandon (Repent from) all hope in anything other than Jesus Christ and His work on the Cross. Our views and opinions about sin and who God is do not matter. Jesus is Lord. And this means that what He says matters. Stop trusting in your works, your religion, your words, your feelings, and your experiences (Hebrews 6:1; 9:14).
5. Trust in the only Work that will withstand all eternity—the Work of Jesus Christ. You must believe on Jesus Christ alone as your personal Lord and Saviour. God the Father was fully satisfied with the Work of Jesus Christ. We must be satisfied as well. (John 1:12; 3:16-18; Romans 4:24; 10:8-14).
Are you still struggling to trust that Jesus is enough? Know that Jesus wants to save you. He has given us everything in His Word we need. Take the Scripture references in this little tract, look each one up, and reflect on these verses. Lay down any pride you may have and come to Christ as a little child (John 6:37).
