• Have you ever told a lie, even a “white” one?

• Have you ever stolen anything?

• Have you ever used God’s name in vain or as a curse word?

• Have you ever longed for something that did not belong to you and belonged to someone else, or envied what someone else had?

• Have you ever disrespected your parents, talked back, or disobeyed them?

If you have ever committed any of these things, you have sinned and broken the law, God’s law, the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17).

Are you innocent or guilty?

What is the punishment for sin? The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Imagine you are in a courtroom, waiting to hear your sentence, when your father walks into the room as the judge. He sees that you committed the crime and because he is a just judge, he cannot allow that no one pays for the crime. As your father, he takes off his robe and steps down from the judge’s seat to take your place. He exchanged his life for yours, so the punishment is paid and you are set free.

That is what Jesus has done for you. You did not deserve to be freed. It was a free gift. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

• Understand that you have sinned. The Bible says everyone is a sinner. “As it is written, ‘There is none righteous, not even one’” (Romans 3:10).

• Know that you can never be good enough to make it to Heaven on your own. “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world” (1 John 4:14).

• Ask God to forgive your sins and turn away from them. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

• Accept Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Savior. “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Being a follower of Jesus Christ is a lifelong commitment. Once you accept Him into your life, it does not end there, it is the beginning. He did not save you to keep you the same. “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

How can you communicate with God?

Through prayer. Praying is your way of speaking to God. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Read the bible. It is God’s way of speaking to you. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

What should you realize?

There is a spiritual battle for our souls. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

But do not be afraid, you are not alone, for God is with you in this battle, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might” (Ephesians 6:10).

How can you learn more?

Find a Bible-teaching church. “They read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading” (Nehemiah 8:8).
