As a boy growing up, many of my favorite memories revolved around time spent in the outdoors fishing and hunting
The size of the quarry really didn’t matter—whether it was smaller fish for the frying pan or big Red Stags. One of the things I enjoyed the most was spending time with friends and family and enjoying the experience together.
As I have gotten older, I have enjoyed sharing this love of the outdoors with my children and grandchildren. I have been blessed with many grandchildren and when I have opportunity to see them, often the first words out of their mouths are, Grandpa can we go hunting?, or Grandpa can we go fishing? I really enjoy this time together, as there are so many life lessons that can be taught through these activities.
Grandchildren are full of life and love
My grandkids are a big part of my heart and I love seeing them enjoy the thrill of the hunt or seeing their excitement in the tug of war with a fish as they try to get it in the boat—even if they really tire grandpa out. One of my grandsons, Ezekiel Cameron Garner (we all call him Zeke) loved both hunting and fishing and seeing the amazing beauty in nature from little Geckos to amazing sunsets.
When Zeke was 8 years old, he and his family came to visit us for the holidays and to celebrate Grandpa’s 60th birthday. We had a wonderful time enjoying the warm summer weather, catching snapper, celebrating Christmas, and being at family camp—that time together will never be forgotten.
Only a few short days later, things would change dramatically
Zeke was having some swelling in his abdomen and needed to go to the hospital to get checked out. Scans were taken and the results were devastating to grandpa—my healthy full-of-life grandson Zeke had only weeks to live as cancer was filling his body. Part of grandpa’s heart was being torn out.
Zeke was a simple kid with simple joys in his life. Of course he still loved hunting and wanted to shoot a Wallaby, as this was something we hunted near where he lived and he was able to do this even though he was very sick and weak. Zeke loved eating the snapper that he had caught and eating the wallaby meat, as well as building Lego sets and singing about Heaven.
These last few weeks were hard for everyone, but Zeke had 2 years before trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior and he was confident that when he died he would be in Heaven with the Lord. A video of his belief in Christ can be seen on youtube.
I miss my grandson and feel like part of my heart is missing, but I know I will see him again in Heaven.
I know this because God promises that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Zeke was asked in the video what advice he has for others, and he simply says ”get saved.”
Zeke is in Heaven today and you can know that you are headed there, too, if you will put your trust in Jesus as your Savior.
The following Bible verses help explain how to be saved.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).
I would be so happy to know that you will live forever with God in Heaven because you have put your trust in Jesus. God makes it clear that we will all spend eternity in one of two places—Heaven or Hell, I pray that you will choose Heaven like Zeke did.
