A good friend of mine—and very successful businessman—Larry Seehusen of Hopkins, Minnesota, is now facing a severe case of cancer. The cancer was not discovered until it got to a very advanced stage and he may or may not make it.

What to do now is a question that many are asking, and possibly you or someone you know may also have some type of cancer. The thought of cancer generally strikes fear and uncertainty in the hearts and minds of those who have been stricken with this dreaded disease. What to do is the question. What if I don’t survive the disease ?

As a businessman, I want to have a contingency plan (a backup plan in case the first doesn’t work) in place if my business has a severe problem. Comparing business with cancer, the cancer problem is much deeper. But I know of a sure backup for those who don’t make it with health problems.

The answer is found in the Bible. The Bible (God’s word) tells us in 1 John 5:13 that “we can know that we have eternal life.” One might reply, “that’s impossible.” Let’s look at a couple of scriptures that tell us how we can know and how we can have peace in any storm of life.

We must examine the problem before we can find the cure. In other words, we need to know the bad news before we can find the good news.

There is a problem that all of us have and it’s far worse than cancer. It spreads like cancer, but it has been in our body and heart since birth. It’s called sin. In fact, the Bible says, “we were born in sin and shaped in iniquity.” So, from birth, this “cancer” called sin has been in our very being. We further read that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). That means that we don’t measure up to God’s standards and in this condition we can’t come to God if we die.

The Bible has lots to say about those who die with the sin burden still on them. One verse says “there will be blackness of darkness forever and weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Luke 13:27,28). Another states “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31). Also, the Lord says “unless you repent [turn from sin to God] you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).

What is the remedy for sin? This is the good news. God loves you!! John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6). In other words, nobody can get to God except through Jesus Christ.

When Paul the apostle was asked, “what must I do to be saved?” he replied, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

The way to God is found in Romans 10:9-10, “That if you will confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead you will be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Won’t you confess you’re a sinner, realize you need a saviour, trust in the work of Christ on the cross, and confess or tell others of the decision you have made? Believing that Christ can save you is the key.

This little message has been shared with Larry and His wife twice and with many of his close family in the hospital a short time before he passed away. It is my prayer that his family all get to know the Lord Jesus on a personal basis and I’m glad to have them all as my friends.

If you are interested in knowing more of what the Bible teaches regarding eternal life, you are welcome to contact me. Thanks for listening; there is so much more that God has planned for those who seek and love Him.

May we all seek Him.
Tom Wright

P.S. Larry did die, and since I wrote this message the Lord has tested us to see if we really believe what I said here.

My entire family of 5 persons has now been touched with this dreaded disease. The first to get cancer was my older daughter who had Leukemia. She has had a bone marrow transplant and has been doing fine for many years.

Next was our younger daughter who died at age 36 due to cancer of the liver less than one month after being diagnosed. We are sure she is in Heaven now, not based on her being good, being baptized, or going to church—she is there by seeing her need to have a Saviour because she could not come up to God’s holy standards. She believed that Jesus dying on the cross paid for all her sins, and she trusted in the one, Jesus Christ, who saved her and made her prepared to die. I could go on and on about her deep trust as she was about to die. She fully trusted in the finished work of Jesus on the cross to take away all her sins and to win her eternal life and a place in heaven. Dear friend, will you be with the saved and be with God and his people in heaven? Trust Christ now while there is time.

My wife, Jan, then had breast cancer, and an operation to remove the cancer and then she had radiation and seems to be doing fine. My son came down with testicular cancer, but is cancer free at this point. About the same time, I was diagnosed with colon cancer which is the fast growing kind. My prognosis is not good, but the Lord has sustained me through it all.

An investigation was conducted to see if there was a connection between our cancers, and none was found. We trust the Lord daily to see what opportunities await us. Look to the Lord and then you can know that you will be in heaven with His people. God bless you.
