Can You Make Sense of Life Without God?

Every day, we rely on things we often take for granted. We trust our minds to reason correctly. We assume the laws of nature will remain consistent. We make moral judgments about right and wrong. We insist that human beings possess dignity and value. Yet many people who confidently use these realities deny the God who makes them possible.

Why should human reasoning correspond to reality? Why should the universe be orderly enough for science to work? Why should moral obligations be binding on everyone? Why should human life possess objective worth? The Christian worldview provides a foundation for these things because the world was created and is sustained by a wise, rational, holy, and personal God.

The Bible teaches that God created mankind in His image and placed us in a world that reflects His character. Because God is rational, we can reason. Because God is faithful, the universe operates in a consistent and orderly manner. Because God is holy, there is an objective standard of right and wrong. Because people are made in God’s image, every human life possesses dignity and value.

In a sense, every unbeliever is “Borrowing from God.”

People use reason, morality, and meaning every day while denying the God who gives those gifts. The problem is not that God has left Himself without a witness. Rather, Scripture says that people suppress the truth about God because they do not want to submit to Him.

Romans 1 explains that God’s existence and power are clearly displayed in the things He has made. Yet instead of honoring Him and giving thanks, mankind has turned away from its Creator. The deepest problem facing humanity is not intellectual but spiritual. We are not merely confused; we are rebels against the God who made us.

This rebellion is called sin. We have all failed to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We have broken His commandments in thought, word, and deed. Because God is perfectly holy and just, He cannot overlook sin. One day every person will stand before Him and give an account.

But the God we have sinned against is also rich in mercy.

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners.

Jesus lived the perfectly righteous life that we have failed to live. He died on the cross, bearing the judgment that sinners deserve, and on the third day He rose from the dead in victory over sin and death. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He accomplished everything necessary for the salvation of His people.

The good news of the gospel is that forgiveness and eternal life are freely offered to all who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ alone. God commands all people everywhere to turn to Him in faith. Those who come to Jesus are forgiven, reconciled to God, and given the gift of eternal life.

The God whose world you live in is the God who calls you to Himself today: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

To learn more, begin reading the Gospel of John and ask yourself this question:

If Christianity is true, what should I do about Jesus Christ?
