A policeman pulled over a driver. “What’s wrong officer? I don’t think I was speeding.”

“No you weren’t”, said the officer. “But I saw you shaking your fist at the driver going too slow in the left lane and then saw you pounding the steering wheel when the Cadillac cut in front of you.”

The driver responded,” but that isn’t a crime?” “No it’s not”, replied the police officer. “But when I saw your bumper sticker ‘Jesus loves you’ I figured the car had to be stolen!”

A hypocrite is a pretender, one who pretends to be better than he really is. Most Christians may act this way at times. Sometimes we say one thing and do another. We are all guilty of that. Like the driver above, if you have ever driven a car on a crowded highway, you know what it is to be a hypocrite.

Realize that just because one is a Christian does not make one sinless. A believer still has the capacity to do wrong and to live inconsistently to the faith (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).

Secondly, God wants believers to grow in grace and knowledge of Him (2 Peter 3:18). That requires discipline, time, and effort. That’s a second reason why there seems to be so many hypocrites in the church–many are not being transformed by the word of God (the Bible) through the Spirit of God.

Lastly, not everyone who claims to be a Christian is one. Some faithfully attend church claiming to know God, believing that ‘good deeds’ will earn them an entrance into heaven. But Jesus will say to them who try to be accepted based upon good works, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:22,23).

So what’s a person to think? First do not judge the Christian faith by the way a particular person or group acts. Secondly, look to the place where you can find the truth—the Bible.

According to the Scripture, everyone is born separated from God with a sin nature. We “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sins are actions that violate the laws of God like lying, stealing, envy, and hate.

And since God sets the standards and because He is holy and just, He must bring judgment against the one who rejects Jesus Christ. “He who does not believe in the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on Him” (John 3:36).

But the GOOD NEWS is that JESUS CHRIST, fully God and fully man, came into the world to save sinners! (1 Timothy 1:15). The Scriptures teach that Christ died for our sins … was buried … and rose bodily from the grave on the third day and appeared to over five hundred brethren at once (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). His death on the cross is the only acceptable payment for our sins (Hebrews 9:12,26,28).

Therefore, simply agree with God that you are a condemned sinner and trust in Christ to save you. God will forgive your sins and give you everlasting life. “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life” (John 3:36). To believe means to trust, to rely on. You can’t earn it. It’s a free gift! “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Christians aren’t perfect. Sometimes they may act hypocritically. The truth is that we all do wrong things and deserve judgment. But God loves you and has provided the only way through His Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16; 14:6). You must trust in Him and His work alone to save you. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
