The most important event in anyone’s life is the moment they accept the free gift of salvation from God.

If you can’t remember receiving this gift, then you probably don’t have it. If someone gives you a gift that is worth more than you could ever imagine, do you think it is possible to not know you have it? God’s free gift of salvation is worth much more than that. Doing good, going to church, giving money, being baptized or sprinkled by a pastor, priest, or pope, confirmation, or signing a card—none of these things can save you. God wants everyone in heaven, but our sin is what is keeping us out, since sin cannot be where God is—it cannot be in heaven.

Satan, the god of this world, often tries to hide this gift of God’s salvation. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 says, “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them.”

To have the free gift of salvation, you must realize:

1. My sin is why I’m not going to heaven.

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

2. Sin is why we die.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

3. God has provided forgiveness for our sin.

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

4. God invites us to receive this grace.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

5. We can have assurance that we have been saved.

“Verily, verily I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24).

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).

All scriptures are from the most-printed book in the world: God’s Word, the 1611 King James Version Bible.

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:28).
