I was about twenty years of age. A bright future seemed to cast its illuminating glow upon life’s pathway. Then one day I noticed that a small bump had been growing on the left side of my body. I thought nothing about it, but after six months it had grown to about the size of a golf ball. It was not painful, but the flesh was very red and the skin which stretched over it was very tight.

One day I asked my coworkers if they had seen this weird bump which had been growing on my side. I lifted up my shirt to show them the bump, and then used my finger to give it an exploratory poke. When I did, the surface on the top of the infirmity broke open and blood flowed out freely. After spilling enough blood so that it took an entire roll of toilet paper to clean it up, my shocked coworkers commanded me to leave work immediately and go to the doctor. After a quick examination by the doctor, I was told there was nothing to worry about; the infirmity on my side was just a sebaceous cyst, a harmless growth that sometimes randomly grows on a person’s body. Only one in a thousand of these turns out to be cancer.

Within an hour, a doctor performed an outpatient surgery upon the infirmed area. After the surgery, I went back to my daily life as if nothing had happened. It was not long, however, before I realized that a bump was growing back where the other bump had been cut off. In fact, in two weeks what had taken six months to grow to the size of a golf ball was almost back to its previous size. Again I went in for an outpatient surgery and had the infirmed flesh removed and sent in for testing. Soon the results came back, but not what I had expected. I was told I had Ewing Sarcoma, a malignant cancer which was spreading rapidly. Even with proper treatment it was considered unlikely I would live more than five years. I was shocked. Five years?

Ewing Sarcoma is similar to a disease that every human being has. The disease of sin must be addressed or dealt with in our lives because it separates us from God who loves us. It will have a negative effect on our eternal state if it is not taken care of. God’s Word the Holy Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” And because every human has sinned, the Bible also tells us that “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The result of sin is death in an eternal separation from God and His Son Jesus Christ in a place called Hell. Just as my physical body would have died if I had not removed the cancer from my side, so shall your soul go to Hell when you die if you have not had your sin removed by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior. The Bible says, “the soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4).

Shortly after receiving my diagnosis, I was transferred to a hospital in Chicago. At this hospital, the second best surgeon in the United States operated on me. The surgery was nine hours long. During the surgery he removed all my flesh down to my ribs for a radius between four and five inches from where the cancerous infirmity was located.

After spending about a week in the hospital, tests were taken to determine if all the cancer had been removed. The results of the test showed there was not a spot of cancer left. I was free and clean from the cancer which could have brought my physical body to the grave.

How about you? Are you free from the cancerous disease called sin which, if it is not taken care of, will eternally separate you from a God who loves you? If you are not free, how can you be rid of this disease? The Bible tells us that “God so loved the world”—that includes every human being that ever lived—“that he gave his only begotten Son”—Jesus Christ—“that whosoever believeth on him, should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). It also says, “If you confess your sins, he”—that is God—“is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

But, you might ask, why should I believe in God and in His Son Jesus Christ? What has been done so that all my sins could be forgiven? My dear friend, the greatest price has been paid for your sins and mine. When it says, “God so loved the world, that He GAVE His only begotten Son,” that means that Jesus Christ the Son of God GAVE His life; He was crucified on a cross, for your sins. You, as a sinner, deserve to die for your sins, because God is holy and hates sin and no one can come into His presence as a sinner. Your sin must be removed in order for you to have a relationship with a holy God, so Jesus Christ the Son of God died and shed his life’s blood on a cross for your sins. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Without the shedding of blood, there can be no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22).

Jesus Christ took your place on the cross, He bore the punishment you rightly should have suffered because you are a sinner, to forgive you of all your sins. If you will accept him as your Savior, all your sins will be forgiven. “He [God] hath made Him [Jesus Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). When your body dies, your soul, which will never die, will go to Heaven to be eternally in the presence of God and His Son Jesus Christ, “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

After I found out that my cancer had been completely removed, I was asked to consider taking treatments of chemo and radiation to make sure that all my cancer was gone. You might ask yourself the question; don’t I need to do good works to gain a good status or to be acceptable before God? The answer is NO! God tells us, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9). The love of God in sending His Son to die for your sins is a gift; all you have to do is accept it.

Jesus Christ did not die and stay dead; no, He rose from the dead and conquered the power of death so that if you will believe in Him, He will give you everlasting life! “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9,10).

Is your heart heavy? Do you seek peace and rest? Jesus says, “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mathew 11:28). —D. J. H.
