The picture on the front shows a view of the earth from the heavens above. Few people have ever experienced such a view firsthand, but those who have are doubtless left without words great enough to describe what they have seen. There is another heavenly view which all of us can take. In fact, it’s a view we must take. A heavenly view of ourselves.

God’s Word, the Bible, gives us this view. From God’s heavenly viewpoint, “there is none righteous, no, not one” for “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10,23). In God’s eyes “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags,” and “man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Isaiah 64:6, Genesis 8:21). This is not a comforting view of mankind. Many today contend that people are generally good, but in God’s holy sight “there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).

Where does this leave us? Are we all condemned? If not for God’s love and grace, the answer would be yes. “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, has “appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:26). The Redeemer, Jesus the Lord, prophesied of in the Old Testament, whose sinless Person and life made Him the only One able to stand in our place before God, “bore our sins in His own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24). The Bible also tells us how “He was buried, and that He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:4), and now “maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:34). “For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17).

So does this mean that everyone is saved? “He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18). The only way of salvation is “repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Repentance involves changing our mind about what we are; admitting that we are lost, helpless sinners without a chance of reaching heaven. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ acknowledges that He paid the price for our sins and that He alone can save us and take us to heaven.

Take a look at yourself through God’s eyes. Then confess to Him that you are a sinner in need of salvation. Trust Jesus as the only Way (John 14:6). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

Then you can be assured of a glorious view of heaven and of Christ Himself (Revelation 22) for all eternity.
