Sexual lust has proven to be the downfall of so many. While the word “lust” isn’t limited to sexual activity, today’s society is overflowing with temptation of a sexual nature, and too many of us have fallen prey. Engaging in por- nography, adultery, homosexuality, fornication, and even pedophilia begins with the problem of lust. That overcoming desire for physical fulfill- ment is not from God, but heaped upon us through sin and the world around us (1 John 2:16).

Lust is often seen as natural, so what could possibly be wrong with it? The problem with lust is that it distracts you from, and stands be- tween you and your Savior. Whether you desire a person that is not your spouse, an individual that is your same gender, or an activity that is purposed to enhance the covenant of marriage; when it occupies space and time that should belong to God, it is no more than an idol you set up to worship instead of God.

Why does lust affect my worship? Lust takes over your mind and consumes your thoughts. It even changes how you perceive your activities and the activities around you, because your hunger for sexual satisfaction or the longing to be intimate with the object of your desire is in control. Truly we should never desire anything more than we desire intimacy with our God.

But no one wants to be alone? God certainly didn’t design us to be alone (Genesis 2:18), but that is never an excuse for giving in to desires that we were not created for. Trusting God means waiting on Him to fulfill our need for companionship. In a practical sense, becoming a part of a community of like-minded individu- als who desire to please God above all else, means that you will not be alone. And most importantly God is the friend the sticks closer than a brother as well as your strength.

Dear God,
Thank you for showing me how to live my life. Thank you for being my friend. Please give me the strength to overcome lust and to trust you above all else. Amen

WHAT IF FULFILLING GOD’S PURPOSE WAS MY GREATEST DESIRE?

God purposed the body for more than the fulfillment of sexual desire:
“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorali- ty, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

1 Corinthians 6:13

God is the only defense against lust:

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:14

It is the spirit of God that should guide us and nothing else:
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

There are benefits to listening to God’s Spirit:

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Romans 8:6
