Monday August 21, 2017 marks for many the only chance in their lifetime that they will be able to personally witness a total eclipse of sunlight! As the moon passes directly between the planet Earth and the Sun, darkness, like that only experienced at night, will happen, in the middle of the afternoon, in “broad daylight” if you will! This phenomena, though rare, is not a miracle, but rather a regular, patterned, predicted course of orbits. The God of creation has set His handiwork in the sky as a testimony and witness to His majestic glory!

The Darkness of Sin

“But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” —Matthew 6:23

The lost soul that has never met the Lord Jesus Christ through the forgiveness of sins walks in darkness.

“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:” —1 John 1:6

All have sinned against a holy God and our sin separates us from the Lord. If we die in our sins, that separation becomes eternal, lasting forever. God’s love for us provided a way of forgiveness through the sacrifice of His own sinless Son!

The Death of the Saviour

“And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”
—Luke 23:45-46

This miraculous eclipse occurred during the crucifixion of Jesus. Sin carries the penalty of death. That penalty was paid by Jesus Christ on the cross and whosoever trusts His sacrifice of Himself as the only necessary payment for their sins can be forgiven.

“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”
—1 John 5:12

The Day of Salvation

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
—2 Corinthians 4:4

When did you receive the forgiveness of your sins by faith alone?

“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” —Romans 4:5

Salvation is not found in the deeds that we do nor the works we perform but is found in the faith and repentance exercised towards God and our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:21)

Will you receive Christ today as your Saviour by faith? As quickly as the sun shines again after the eclipse you can become a child of God, leaving the paths of darkness to walk in His marvelous light! -Evangelist David Wayne Handley, ThD, DD
