You should not be here.
“You should not be here,” the state trooper informed me as we stood in the middle of the highway. I fully understood he meant that I should not be alive. He continued, “When this kind of accident happens on this highway, people don’t make it.”
I responded, “God had other plans!”
My friend and I were on our way to the airport, delayed behind a slower-moving truck. When I tried to pass, I saw two headlights immediately in front of me. I totally expected we would collide head-on. Death seemed inescapable.
In the split second before we crashed, somehow God enabled me to whip the car back, causing the oncoming driver to hit my car at an angle instead of head-on. The airbags exploded. My car spun, crashed into the Jersey barrier, and stopped.
“We’re still here!” we exclaimed. Pieces of my car were strewn across the lanes, but we were not injured! We later learned the drunk driver continued the wrong way until her car gave out.
Why are you still here?
In the US, alcohol-impaired drivers kill someone every 45 minutes. Nine people die daily because of distracted drivers. Deaths caused by drug-impaired crashes are more difficult to estimate.
Have you ever wondered how many times God has protected you from reckless drivers?
God created you to know and love Him, and at the end of this life, to live with Him forever. He has spared your life thus far to give you the chance to be reconciled to Him and to “know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). “The Lord is ... patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish [be eternally separated from Him in hell], but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
Would you face death with confidence?
While the car was spinning out of my control, I had peace knowing heaven was only a breath away. I experienced Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me ... and ... comfort me.” God wants to give you that peace so that you can be confident in the face of death.
How can I be ready for eternity?
Your life can be taken away in a moment. No one is promised tomorrow. Your good deeds cannot secure eternal life (Titus 3:5).
Because we all sin (break God’s law), we are guilty before God and disqualified from His perfect heaven (Rom. 3:23). We will suffer deserved eternal judgment (Romans 6:23) unless we receive God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus (John 1:12), who gave His life on the cross to pay the penalty of our sin (Romans 5:1-11).
Jesus conquered death when He rose from the dead (Matthew 28:6). He loves you and will forgive you if you turn from sin and come to Him for mercy.
“For our sake [God] made [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21). What a great exchange! Jesus takes your sin and gives you His righteousness so you are no longer guilty before God!
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord [Jesus as Sovereign Ruler] will be saved” (Rom. 10:9-13). Will you pray? Tell God you believe Him, admit your sin, and accept His forgiveness and the free gift of His Son to become your Lord and Savior. Then you will be ready for eternity at any moment!
