You Save Others Every Day, But Who Will Save You
For over 25 years, I have served my small-town community as a firefighter and EMT. For a short time, I was even a noncertified reserve officer with the police department.
Every day we see the best and worst of people. We see joy and sadness, gratitude and anger, hope and desperation. We do what we do because we want to save those who can’t save themselves.
But who will save you?
As a first responder, every day you put your life on the line to save someone else’s. In John 15:13 Jesus said:
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
That is the kind of love that you show every day when the tones go off, and you respond to help someone in need. This is the love that Jesus demonstrated when He sacrificed His own life on the cross so that we can be forgiven for our sins and have the hope of eternal life.
“But God commendeth [demonstrated] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
You want to protect and save every life that is in danger, but sadly, there are times that we cannot. The Bible tells us that:
“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
Physical death is a reality that we will all someday face. That reality brings forth some questions that demand an answer. What if the next call you go on is your last? What if you make the ultimate sacrifice in service to your community? Where will you spend eternity? We all know the risks, but we never stop to think that it could happen to us.
In Luke 19:10 Jesus said that he came to:
“Seek and save that which was lost.”
Sure, we may be able to save the body from death, but we cannot save the soul from Hell. That is why Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and rose again on the third day. He bore the penalty for your sins to save you from the awful judgment of an eternity in Hell that awaits all who reject Jesus Christ as their savior.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18).
Jesus will save you!
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
Salvation is a gift that is freely offered to everyone, including you. But like any gift, it must be received to be yours. Will you call upon the Lord in prayer right now and confess to God that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness, believing that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again for you, and ask Him to be your savior? Please, don’t wait until it’s your E.O.W. and it is eternally too late.
