“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).

A heavy drinker came up to a pastor’s car window and with a big smile told him, “I’m gettin’ some religion!” Somehow he thought that might impress the pastor. When it comes to “religion,” what matters to God is not an earthly form of devotion. God wants a change of heart. He wants a turnaround from trusting oneself to trusting His love for us through Jesus. The biblical word for that turnaround is “repentance.” It comes from the verb REPENT.

What does it mean to “repent”?

Repent literally means “to turn.” When Jesus said, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish,” He meant that unless we turn from trusting ourselves to trusting Him for salvation, we will suffer eternal condemnation.

“There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:1-5).

Who wants to suffer eternal condemnation? You’d have to be crazy to want that!! God does not hide from us what it takes to repent, to turn from trusting ourselves to trusting His love for us in Jesus.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

If He was speaking to us in everyday language, He’d say:

“Now here is what I want. This is the real deal!!

“You gotta know it takes a humble heart. Can’t do it with pride or stubbornness. First things first: Humility. Got it? Humbly recognize you have stepped over My line of obedience and sinned. You see the reality of sin in human conflict. You understand what sin is. Can recognizing sin save you from condemnation? No.

“Next, you have to admit to the sinfulness you recognize and say, ‘Yes, I have sinned, and I do sin against You, O God!’ Can admitting sin save you from condemnation? No.”

Remember now, imagine God speaking directly to you. He says:

“This may not be easy. You must stay humble. Now I want to see genuine sorrow and sadness because of your sin. Maybe even some tears if they come. Will genuine sorrow for your sins save you from condemnation? No.

“Let’s kick it up a notch! Now I want to hear the words through your tears, ‘Lord God, I confess that the guilt is mine. No one else. No blame on anyone else. It’s all me, God, it’s my own fault.’ Can sincere confession of sin save you from condemnation? No.

“Remember in My Word that Judas was very sorry for his sin of betraying My Son, Jesus. He recognized, admitted, and confessed, then went out and hung himself. There’s much more to learn.

“Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, it is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, and they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me” (Matthew 27:3-10).

“What do you want from Me in relation to your sin for which you are so sorry? In your heart, you want My forgiveness, cleansing, pardon, love, mercy, and compassion. Desire for My forgiveness is what saves you from sin’s guilt as you receive My forgiveness into Your soul.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:1-17).

“I can see humility that now fills your heart. Not only do you desire My forgiveness, but you receive My forgiveness. Can sincere desire for My forgiveness and sincerely receiving My forgiveness save you? What do you think? What do you now believe? Does it save you!? Absolutely! Yes! Yes! Yes! Why does it save you?

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13).

“Don’t you say it. I’ll say it! Because I sent My own dear Son to shed His blood on the cross of Calvary. I raised Him from the dead to prove I accepted His willing sacrifice to pay for Your guilt of sin.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us” (1 John 1:5-10).

“He took your guilt. Your fault became His fault because He had none of His own. He carried your burden to His own death to set you free from eternal condemnation.

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again” (John 10:10-17).

“Stay humble, now. It takes humility to desire My pardon and receive the gift My Son Jesus earned for you. If you get proud, get proud about Jesus, nothing else. Not yourself. Not your repenting. Only Jesus, My Son.

“Is there more, you might ask? Oh, yes! There is more. The turn of repentance continues. I know that deep in your heart, receiving forgiveness in Jesus makes you want to turn from your sin and turn to Me.

“Because that is so very difficult, I give you the power of My Holy Spirit who now lives in your heart by faith in Me!

“This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:16-26).

“If you want to learn more about what matters to Me, pick up a New Testament. I’ll teach you a whole lot more about my Son, what it means to repent, to turn to Me. I’ll bless you as I continue to bless so many others. I leave you with My peace!”

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you” (Philippians 4:4-9).

Repent and invite Jesus to live in your heart and be Lord of your life. The kingdom of heaven is a prayer away. Jesus says, “Come to Me, seek My forgiveness for your sins of disobedience and I will give you peace!”
