Who was Jesus of Nazareth? Why did He come to earth? Was He more than just a man? Was He God in the flesh? What message did He deliver to the people? Why did He have to die?

Few will dispute that a man named Jesus lived over 2,000 years ago, who was an excellent teacher and had an everlasting effect on the world from His time to this present day.

Isaiah 7:14 (The Prophecy)—“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (KJV).

Matthew 1:23 (Fulfillment of the Prophecy)—“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (KJV).

Jesus made a claim that was breathtaking in its audacity—that He was the Son of God, the long-prophesied Messiah! The religious authorities in Jerusalem rejected Him, hated Him and eventually succeeded in having Him put to death. Isaiah 53:3 says, “He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces He was despised, and we held Him in low esteem” (NIV).

Judaism and Paganism opposed the development of Jesus’ teachings and used unlawful and violent methods to try to destroy the development of God’s word. Likewise, the local Roman Civil authorities saw Jesus as a threat and set out to forcefully persecute the followers of the Jewish teacher from Galilee and were also complicit in the execution of Christ.
Jesus became very popular among the people and drew crowds in the thousands that believed in Him. “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost”(Luke 19:10, NIV).

The Religious leaders were undoubtedly jealous and angry of Jesus’ teaching and popularity to all (even those who were not of the Jewish faith). Nevertheless, Jesus’ greatest adversary was not the sinners that He came to save, but the religious establishment. The religious leaders’ primary motivation for seeking a way to get rid of Jesus was fear. Jesus was hated by some of the Jewish leaders. They demanded that the Romans put Jesus to death (Matthew 27:23-25, KJV).

The religious leaders could not allow Jesus to continue to work signs and wonders, for it threatened their way of life and position in life. The religious leaders rejected the truth that Jesus was preaching. Jesus requested that they repent and seek God. The religious leaders did not understand that Jesus’ kingdom was not of this world, and His priesthood was not in agreement to flesh and blood. Since the Jews did not have the right to have a man killed during the Passover, they prompted the Roman Governor to crucify Him. While there was no evidence of wrong-doing found that Jesus had committed, they still wanted Jesus killed.

The religious leaders continued to put pressure on Pilate to kill Jesus. Pilate eventually gave the Roman soldiers authority to crucify Christ.
Jesus had been whipped and repeatedly beaten before they took Him to be crucified. While continuously being whipped, Jesus carried the cross (the burdens of our sins) to Golgotha Hill. The Roman soldiers laid the cross on the ground while they nailed Jesus’ hands and feet to it with big spike nails (this made the holes in Jesus’ hands).

They then lifted up the cross and dropped it into a hole which they dug in the ground. The entire weight of Jesus body tore at the spike nails, and the pain was almost beyond endurance. As the blood began to pour from Jesus’ body, He knew that God’s ultimate plan of salvation was at hand. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1 Corinthians 15:22, NIV)

Even while enduring all the pain, Jesus announced His unmerited love for us saying, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34, KJV).

At the same time of Jesus crucifixion, two thieves were being crucified, one on each side of Jesus. One thief expressed belief in Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus extended mercy to him and said, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43, KJV).

Afterward, Jesus cried out to His Father, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” (Which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) (Matthew 27:46, NIV). In His final words, Jesus surrendered to the will of God as He said, “It is finished; Father into Thy hands I commend my spirit” (John 19:30). He then bowed His head and gave up the spirit.

Scripture tells us that many were instrumental in the death of Christ. Were you there? Did you have a hand in crucifying Christ? Did you scream, “kill him?” Did you say nothing?

Ultimately, it was God who put Jesus to death. God’s plan was the greatest act of divine justice ever carried out, for His purpose. The death of Jesus and the cross that He bore for you and me secured the salvation of countless sinners and provided the only way to forgive man of the sin without compromising His holiness and perfect righteousness. God’s plan was a gracious act of His mercy and goodness and the ultimate expression of love for us as sinners.

When God sees His son and the blood that He shed (through the holes in his hands and feet) He recognizes our transgressions, iniquities, and the penalty that brought us peace was on Jesus, and “by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5, NKJV).

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV). So, as we survey our lives, we must recognize that it was our sins that nailed Jesus to the cross. 

Resurrection

When Jesus appeared to the eleven they worshiped Him; but some doubted (Matthew 28:17). He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. He showed the eleven disciples the piercing in His side and the holes in His hands and feet that were made by the Roman soldiers.

“Behold my hands and my feet that it is I. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have” (John 20:20). When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” (John 20:27, NKJV).

“So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19, NKJV). Several times in the Bible, Jesus is referenced as sitting at the Father’s right hand in heaven (Psalm 110:1,5, Mark 16:19, Luke 22:69, Matthew 26:64, Acts 2:33, 7:55, Revelation 3:21,5:1).

Jesus ascended to heaven to reclaim His seat on The Right Hand of The Father in Heaven with the holes in His Hands and Feet to remind the Father of the ultimate plan of the sacrificial lamb.

Answer:  The piercing in Jesus’ side and the holes in His Hands and Feet.
