Christmas is a time that many people all around the world—especially those who subscribe to Christianity—focus on peace, love, joy, the exchange of gifts, caring and sharing with neighbors, friends and families. Christians celebrate Christmas in recognition of Jesus Christ as God’s Gift for their deliverance from sin and eternal death. In the United States, the Christmas season is marked with decorations, as streets, offices, stores, and homes are adorned with lights.

The beauty of Christmas lights, decorations, and songs, combined with the spirit of giving, create opportunities for advertising and sales. However, as the Christmas season gives way to the New Year, people who have charged their credit cards for diverse gifts are left with overwhelming debt to pay at the beginning of the New Year.

How can you celebrate Christmas in a way that will honor God and fulfill his divine purpose for your life? The best way of celebrating Christmas begins with the right reason. The true reason for celebrating Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. God sent Jesus to the world in order to save us from sin and reconcile us back to Himself. The Bible says about Jesus: “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21).

The birth of Jesus to deliver people from their sins demonstrated the love of God for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). Jesus was born in order to bring reconciliation between God and mankind because God loves mankind but hates sin.

Christmas has been celebrated in many countries in many ways for centuries, but instead of the “peace on earth and goodwill to men” that Jesus’ birth should have brought to the world, there have been wars, animosity, hatred and division. Many who celebrate Christmas today are self-centered, and sometimes do not care about the reason for the season. This is because they do not have Jesus, the prince of peace, in their lives. Please understand that a true celebration of Christmas can only take place when Christ lives in you. This will happen when you surrender your life to Jesus by confessing your sins, turning to God, and accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior.

The purpose of God is to make the best parts of Christmas (peace, love, joy, fellowship) a way of life by causing us to become like Christ in every aspects of our lives. Then Christmas will no longer be a mere festival with only seasonal happiness.

Jesus is no longer a baby. He was born, lived, was crucified, died, rose again on the third day and is now sitting in heaven at the right hand of God. He is coming back for His true followers.

Jesus is alive today and He is living in the hearts of only those who make room for Him by accepting Him as their Lord and personal Savior. If you will let Him rule in your heart today, He will become your King and give you the Holy Spirit to help you to celebrate Christmas in ways that honor God. Celebrating Christmas in ways that honor God does not end on Christmas Day alone. It is allowing Jesus to be Lord in your heart so that you will show His peace, kindness, and love to all people. Jesus will also make you see other people as they truly are—souls made in His image who deserve love, respect, and fairness.

Do you want to love Christ and celebrate Christmas in ways that please Him? If you have not trusted Christ as your Savior, you are missing out. You need to receive Him into your life before time runs out. Today is your day of salvation: tomorrow may be too late. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2).

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross is sufficient for us all, but salvation is only given to those who believe in Him. The first step to do that is to accept Him as your Lord and savior by confessing your sin, turning to God, and asking Jesus to come into your life.

Jesus is the best gift that God has ever given to us. Receiving this gift of God for Christmas begins with you acknowledging Him as lord and forsaking your sins. You cannot save yourself: you have to believe that Jesus died for your sin and rose again on the third day and trust Him to save you.

If you can sincerely say this prayer, you can be assured from God’s word that when you die you are going to heaven:

Dear Lord Jesus I recognize and confess that I am a sinner. I believe that you died for me. I believe you rose again on the third day and you ascended to heaven. I trust you as my Lord and my Savior. Going forward, I completely depend on you, amen.

If you sincerely pray this prayer, putting your trust in Jesus Christ to forgive your sins, congratulations now you know that you are going to heaven based on the word of God. Jesus says in John 3:36 that “he who believes in the Son has everlasting life.”
