It is the desire and dream of almost every young person to acquire fame and fortune.
People think that riches of silver and gold will bring happiness and contentment. Those who do acquire material riches in this world usually find disillusionment, an emptiness of life, and no real purpose for living. One famous person, who acquired fame and became a multi-millionaire, sat down one day in his plush office and wrote the following note: “NOTHING TO LIVE FOR.” He then put a gun to his head and took his life.
The rich young ruler mentioned in the Bible had everything but a happy, contented life, and when Christ told him how to acquire not only a contented life but eternal life as well, he went away very sad, because he wasn’t willing to give up worship of his great possessions.
How then does one really acquire true riches and a happy, contented life?
Is it possible by following a few simple directions which are guaranteed by God Himself.
• First, admit to God that you are a failure, a sinner on your way to hell.
The Bible tells us that “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
• Have a real desire to change your way of life.
Christ died for sinners (for you). He wants to be your Lord and Saviour. He has already paid for your sins by shedding His blood on the cross.
“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:8-9).
• Confess to Him your need of Him and accept Him (invite Him into your heart).
John 1:12 says: “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.”
• If you accept Him into your heart, He will then put the witness of the Holy Spirit into your heart that you are saved and belong to Him (Romans 8:16).
You will then experience new joy, contentment, and happiness that you have never had before.
Christ became poor, that we through His poverty might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). The richest persons I know are those who are the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:17 says: “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.”
I became rich on December 13, 1963. I trusted Christ as my Saviour and invited Him into my heart and life. Not only did I experience salvation, but a rich, new way of life filled with abundant living.
It’s my prayer and desire that you, too, may discover the riches that God has for your life. If you have never trusted Christ to be your Lord and Saviour, would you just now, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, bow your head and ask Jesus to forgive your sins and come into your heart and life?
