Jesus spoke of two roads that people travel in life. Most travel a wide, crowded road that leads to destruction. But there is another less-traveled road that leads to life. Jesus said:
“Because strait [narrow] is the gate, and narrow [hard] is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:14
Those on this narrow road:
What did they discover that made them choose this road?
They learned they are sinners guilty of disobeying a Holy God.
“As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one” Romans 3:10
They learned they can offer to God nothing that will make them acceptable to Him; no amount of good works, no amount of remorse, no acts of religion, no church sacraments can save them.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
They know they are helpless to please God.
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6
They hated the sin that came between them and God and cast themselves upon God’s only Remedy for their sin problem: the Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, where God’s Son took the punishment for the sins of the world, and then rose again from the dead.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
They asked Jesus to save them from the punishment of their sins, to wash them clean from their sin. The moment they believed, they received Eternal Life and became a follower of Jesus Christ. This road ends in Heaven. Jesus said:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24
Most are on the WRONG ROAD
Many are willing to stand before God and be judged based on their behavior in this life. They believe that their sins are not so bad that God would send them to Hell to be punished. But the Bible says:
“The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Dear Friend, the Bible describes the Great White Throne Judgment. This is where all who trust in their own good works will be judged. It is the judgment of the doomed.
Are you trusting in your good works? Are you trusting a system of church sacraments?
Or are you ONLY trusting in what Jesus did on the Cross of Calvary 2000 years ago—in that One Sacrifice for your sins? God will only accept you on the basis of what Christ did on the Cross. That is a humbling thought, but it is the ONLY way.
“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:11-15
Perhaps you are thinking that you already believe in Jesus…that your belief plus your good works can be offered to God and secure for you Eternal Life. But the Bible says:
“And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.” Romans 11:6
To offer to God our works plus our belief in Jesus is to reject God’s free gift of salvation. We either humbly receive God’s salvation by grace (the unearned gift of God), or we pollute the offer by mixing it with our own pitiful works of righteousness (our filthy rags as the Bible describes them). For you to be saved, Jesus must receive ALL the glory. Consider the thief who died on a cross alongside Jesus. In the last minutes of his life, the thief received Jesus as his Savior. He had nothing else to offer God except his trust in the Savior who was suffering beside him. And as the thief hung there, Jesus promised him that he would be in Paradise with Jesus that very day. The thief had nothing to offer God but his trust in Jesus, and Jesus receives all the glory for that.
Dear Friend, you must make a definite decision to choose the road that leads to Eternal Life. It is a life-changing decision that begins the moment you believe on Jesus Christ.
Remember Jesus said:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24
To receive God’s gift of Eternal Life:
Realize: Admit you are a sinner and are helpless to save yourself.
Repent: Turn from going your own way to a life of following Jesus.
Believe: Trust that Jesus died on the Cross and took the punishment for your sins. Put your complete faith in Him.
Call: Ask God to save you from the eternal punishment of your sins. For the Bible says:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9
If you have called upon Jesus to save you, then you will want to grow to become the follower God wants you to be. Read the Bible and unite with a Bible-believing church.
