Wouldn’t you like to be blessed by God?
Sometimes it seems like life is falling apart, but God wants to bless you! He loves you and wants a relationship with you.
It was His purpose since before He made the world, that He would come down to earth and show us the way to have a relationship with Him.
JESUS is the only way and if you listen to Him, He will show you the path to…
Ultimate Blessing
In Matthew 5 this path is clearly laid out in three movements toward God and the blessing He offers you.
The first public sermon Jesus gave began with what is known as the “Beatitudes.” They are found in Matthew 5:3-10.
Here Jesus shows us the way to have a relationship with God.
Each movement has three steps. These steps are not a checklist; instead they bring us to an encounter with God and transform the way we live.
Your sin has separated you from God, and you cannot save yourself. But God offers us mercy and grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. When we come to Him, He sheds His light in us and calls us to be His light in a world of darkness.
THIS IS THE WAY
Movement #1 Recognizing your great need for God
Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” So how “poor” are you? The Bible says your spirit is actually DEAD! But this is good news because God’s kingdom is for you!
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Our rebellion has separated us from our loving Creator. We grieve because we realize our failure is what ruined our relationship with Him.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” It’s hard to admit that we are spiritually bankrupt and wicked. Though this may bring us to great remorse, a meek, or humble person will recognize there is nothing they can do to earn the favor of a holy God.
This is where we cry out in desperation and God takes over in movement #2.
Movement #2 The Good News, or Gospel
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Jesus is speaking to the spiritually starved. Is it the deep longing of your soul to be right with God? Take heart, this means God has begun to work in you!
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” To be mercy-full, is to first be full of the mercy God offers. We can then show others the mercy God has shown us.
“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Obtaining a pure heart can only be done through God taking away our wicked heart and giving us His pure heart. God wants us to see Him through eyes of love as He sees us. And so the adventure begins …
God showed us His love by doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. Movement #3 is our opportunity to love God back.
Movement #3 God’s calling on our lives
“Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called [children] of God.” Once we have found peace with God, we will want to help others find the same peace. This desire identifies you as one of God’s children.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Jesus does not pretend that this new life of righteousness will be easy.
“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.” The reward of being identified as belonging to Him will out-weigh the difficulties of life on earth, looking forward to being with Him forever.
Jesus calls us to follow Him saying, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
In order to come to God, we must first realize our sin has separated us from our loving Creator and there is nothing we can do to earn His favor.
But Jesus came and sacrificed Himself on our behalf. We deserve eternal death, but God sent His Son Jesus to take our place and pay the debt that we could not pay. But Jesus did not stay dead. The grave could not hold Him down and now He is alive forevermore!
Jesus promises that those who trust in Him will never die! (John 11:25) He is preparing a home for us in heaven. He commissions us to go and tell the world of His Good News and to follow Him, even if it is difficult. No one can ever take away the eternal life Christ offers us!
WHAT'S NEXT?
If you feel God is calling you to enter a relationship with Him, talk to Him about it. He knows your thoughts and hears your words. This is called prayer.
If you would like to learn more about Jesus and the way He wants us to live, the rest of this sermon is in Matthew 5-7. Don’t be afraid to read the Bible for yourself. We encourage you to find a local Bible-believing church that is willing to help you on your journey.
