Please take a minute and think about this scenario:

You are on an airplane with several other people all heading to your destination. Suddenly, the pilot comes over the intercom with an urgency in his voice to let everyone know the plane is going to crash. He explains that something toxic has entered the gas tank of the plane causing the fuel to no longer be useful.

Everyone immediately starts to panic. The pilot quickly gives everyone the good news that he prepared parachutes before taking off. Relief sets in, but you desperately want to know how to get one of these parachutes. He reassures everyone that there is a parachute for every single person and all you have to do is put it on.

The next thing he says is crucial. He is not sure when the plane will crash, and there will be a very small window of time when the plane is at the perfect altitude and speed for everyone to jump. He fervently warns that if you do not have your parachute securely fastened and you are not ready to jump when he says to jump, you will miss that very small window of time that will guarantee your survival. 

How would you handle this good news about the parachute? Wouldn’t you want to put this parachute on as fast as you could and be prepared to jump?

What if I told you that Jesus Christ is our parachute? And all we have to do is put Him on? 

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 13:14). 

God, like the pilot in the scenario, is telling us that we are on a path that will surely lead to eternal destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:9). We“all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin entered this world, and we are all separated from God because of it. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Panic should set in when we hear this, just as it would if a pilot tells us our plane is going to crash.

The Good News that God gives us, is that He made a way for all of us to escape this separation and death caused by sin and have eternal life with Him! “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Just like the pilot in the scenario was uncertain of when the plane was going to crash, Jesus tells us that no one knows the day or the hour of His return to judge the unbelieving world (Matthew 24:36). We should not wait to put on the Lord Jesus Christ, because it will soon be too late. “Behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). This very moment is our “small window of time” to secure our salvation. 

Just as we would need instructions on how to put on a parachute, God gives us instructions on how to “put on” Jesus as our Lord and Savior. 

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

In the scenario about the airplane, the passengers only had two options. They could immediately put on the parachute and be ready to jump at the exact moment which would guarantee survival, or they could refuse to put on the parachute and perish with the plane. Similarly, in life, we only have two options. We can choose to put on the Lord Jesus Christ immediately and secure our way into eternal life, or we can refuse to accept Him as our Savior, continue to live in sin, and go away into everlasting punishment. (Matthew 25:46) 

God is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Jesus said, “I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

Jesus could come at any moment. Put on the Lord Jesus as your Savior and be ready!
