  • There are around 60,000 car washes across the United States–that number is expected to DOUBLE in just a few years.
  • Every second 1,000 wash loads of laundry are started in the United States. That’s about thirty-five billion loads per year!
  • The first laundromat in the United States opened in Texas in 1934.
  • Sanitation workers have the third most dangerous job in the nation–with twice the fatality rate of police officers and almost seven times that of firefighters.
  • There are more than 25,000 dry cleaning businesses in the United States.
  • Over 3,000,000 Americans were employed in housekeeping, janitorial, or maid services in 2023.

Have you ever stopped to think about all the cleaning we do?

Studies have shown the average person will spend seven years of their life doing laundry, cleaning, and showering! They will spend over another month brushing their teeth and washing their hands. It’s obviously important to have clean rooms, clean clothes, and clean hands–but what about getting clean on the inside?

What about a clean heart?

People cannot see inside us, but God sees. In His Word, He says about mankind, “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy” (Psalm 14:3). We are all sinners. We have all done wrong and broken God’s commandments. “There is none righteous, no, not one. All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23). Ecclesiastes 7:20 says, “there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Not one of us has a heart that is pure and clean, without a single sin stain. All of us need cleansing–cleansing on the inside!

Many people try to clean themselves up. But God’s Word tells us this does not work.

All our attempts at righteousness–good deeds, religious rituals, etc.–are in vain. “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). Human effort and good works cannot take away our sin or cleanse us. “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?” (Proverbs 20:9).

The Bible tells us in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death.” God is righteous and just. He must punish sin. One day, all people will stand before Him. There will be no hope for those who have died in their sins. There will be no possibility of getting clean after death. “He which is filthy, let him be filthy still” (Revelation 22:11).

Our only hope is to be cleansed and forgiven now!

Those who have been cleansed from their sin will spend eternity with God in Heaven. But those who die in their sins will spend eternity separated from Him in a place called the “lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

The important question is: “How then can man be justified with God … how can he be clean…?” (Job 25:4). The answer is given to us in 1 John 1:7—“The blood of Jesus Christ … cleanseth us from all sin.”

We celebrate Jesus’ birth at Christmas. But He was much more than just a Baby in a manger. He was Almighty God. He came to our world in love to make a way for us to be cleansed forever of our sin stains. He loved us so much that He was willing to take the punishment for our sins Himself! He died on the cross as the sacrifice, or payment, for our sins and rose again from the dead.

Now He is in Heaven, ready to save anyone who will call on Him. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:2 “Christ … hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice.” 1 Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.” Those who place their faith and trust in Christ are fully forgiven and eternally cleansed of all their sin. “For by grace are ye saved through faith … it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Will you accept God’s free gift of forgiveness and cleansing?

Receive Christ as your Saviour! Bow your heart and pray. Admit your sin to Him; your need of forgiveness. Tell Him you believe He died and rose for you, and that you are trusting His death on the cross to be the payment for your sins. God’s Word promises, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

“Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood … be glory” (Revelation 1:5-6).
