Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling—everyday, we use our senses and our minds to learn more about ourselves and the world around us. By using our senses, we can know about the physical world that surrounds us. But what about spiritual matters? Can we know these things also?
We can know God
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10).
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).
“I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own” (John 10:14).
We can know that we are sinners
“How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin” (Job 13:23).
“O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You” (Psalm 69:5).
“Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing That you have forsaken the Lord your God, And the fear of Me is not in you,” Says the Lord God of hosts” (Jeremiah 2:19).
“Now we know that whatever the law says [10 commandments, etc.], it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:19,20).
We can know the way of salvation
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).
“Therefore let all … know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36).
“You know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin” (1 John 3:5).
“Let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man [Jesus Christ] is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38,39).
We can know that we are saved
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27,28).
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).
“I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12).
What wondrous blessings overflow,
When we can truly say, “I know”—
I know in whom I have believed,
I know the One I have received
I know His blood avails for me,
I know that I was blind, but see
I know that my Redeemer lives,
I know the gift He freely gives,
I know He’ll keep me to the end,
I know He’s my unfailing Friend,
I know He’s coming in the sky,
I know the time is drawing nigh.
