The year was 1965, and Mick Jagger’s iconic and gritty voice could often be heard on radios across the world, belting out the now legendary lyrics, “I can’t get no satisfaction, I can’t get no satisfaction, ‘cause I try, and I try, and I try, and I try I can’t get no…” At twenty-two years old, Jagger was crying out from the depths of his soul that nothing in this world was able to give him what he was longing for. Even though he was on top of the world, where millions of young men strive to be, contentment seemed to elude the young musician. He is now seventy-seven years old, with decades of fame, fortune, and pleasure in his rear-view mirror. Has Mick Jagger finally found it? Does he have that coveted satisfaction he so desperately craved as a young man? Or does it still elude him?

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

This world cannot give us what we truly desire. Many things seem to promise that they can, but they turn out to be colossal disappointments which leave us feeling empty and more miserable than before. If one of the greatest rock stars of all time cannot find satisfaction in the pleasures of this life than the rest of us obscure ones will likely not fare much better. Jagger has had the world at his fingertips. What more could he possibly want?

Jesus Christ, speaking to His disciples, said: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). This Jesus of Nazareth, a man who claimed to be God, spoke such dogmatic words with such authority and conviction that, to this day, billions of men and women have trusted Him. While He walked upon the earth that He spoke into existence, He told those who knew Him that He was what they were searching for. He would be the source of contentment, the very thing that would truly bring satisfaction to the soul. 

I turn my attention to you, my reader. Are you satisfied in life? Has this life that you have lived so far been able to provide you with the contentment and peace of mind that you long for in the very core of your being? If you are still not complete, perhaps it may be that you were made for something more. Perhaps this world does not contain the solution to the restlessness you feel inside. 

Christianity offers Jesus as the solution to the satisfaction you are longing for. He said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). If you are still searching for satisfaction, I encourage you to listen to Jesus, for it is only in Him that you will find all you need.

Jesus is not only your Creator, but also the only One who can make you right with God. Everyone has sinned, and everyone is searching for the solution, whether they realize it or not. Jesus came to earth, showed us the path of life, and then laid down His life as payment for our sin. God has declared that “whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and let Him satisfy you. No longer live a life of rebellion against God. Lay down your weapons, admit that you need His forgiveness, and invite Him to be your Lord and Savior. This will mean surrender. Your pride will have to be killed. But the reward is salvation from the punishment of sin, and a relationship with the God who made you. When your time on earth is done, you will enter eternal satisfaction in the presence of joy unspeakable. What will you do?
