For many of us, Christmas is one of our favorite times of the year. It is nice to get a break from our normal routines and spend time with family and friends. Many of us have special Christmas customs and traditions, including decorations, meals, songs, and the exchanging of gifts with loved ones. All of these things are very nice, but do they convey the true meaning of Christmas?

If we slow down and strip away the layers of glitter, commercialism, and tradition that surround the celebration of Christmas, the holiday’s true meaning becomes easier to see. We can still see a star that reminds us of the star which the wise men followed two thousand years ago while seeking the child Jesus. And we remember the message of the angel to the shepherds: “There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). Christmas is the day that we celebrate the birth of the Christ—Jesus the Son of God.

What was the reason Jesus left His home in Heaven to come to this world? Was it simply to do good works, or to leave an example for us to follow? No, it was much more than that. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15). He came to deal once and for all with the problem of sin that separates every one of us from God. You might say, “But I’m not a sinner!” Have you ever lied? Have you ever had an impure thought? God’s standard of holiness leaves no room for imperfection, and His word is very true when it says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Yes, we are all sinners, and the day is coming when “Each of us shall give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). On that day, will you measure up? We can know for sure, because God has already declared what is required: “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).

Why is it so important that we believe (put our trust) in Jesus? Because God has made it clear that forgiveness of sins is not based on what we do for Him—it’s based entirely on what He has done for us.

The gift of eternal life was purchased when Jesus, the sinless sacrifice, died on the cross for our sins (Romans 6:23). Now He is risen from the dead and offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who approaches Him with a repentant heart and trusts Him as their Savior.

Here is where the true meaning of Christmas becomes clear to see. Christmas is all about God’s great love for us and the priceless gift that He offers to all. If you have never made Jesus your Savior, just follow this A-B-C: admit your need of a Savior, believe that Jesus died for you, and call out to Him. He will save you!

“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Para muchos de nosotros, la Navidad es una de nuestras épocas favoritas del año. Es bueno tomar un descanso de nuestras rutinas normales y pasar tiempo con familiares y amigos. Muchos de nosotros tenemos costumbres y tradiciones navideñas especiales, que incluyen decoraciones, comidas, canciones y el intercambio de regalos con nuestros seres queridos. Todas estas cosas son muy bonitas, pero ¿transmiten el verdadero significado de la Navidad?

Si hacemos una pausa y nos despojamos de todo el brillo, el comercialismo y las tradiciones en torno a la celebración de la Navidad, el verdadero significado de la festividad se vuelve más fácil de ver. Somos capaces de ver una estrella que nos recuerda la estrella que siguieron los magos hace dos mil años, mientras buscaban al niño Jesús. No, fue mucho más que eso. “Cristo Jesús vino al mundo para salvar a los pecadores” (1 Timoteo 1:15). Vino a remediar de una vez por todas el problema del pecado que nos separa de Dios. Tú podrías decir: “¡Pero yo no soy un pecador!”. ¿Has mentido alguna vez? ¿Has tenido alguna vez un pensamiento impuro? La norma de santidad de Dios no deja lugar a la imperfección, y Su palabra es muy cierta cuando dice: “Todos pecaron y no alcanzan la gloria de Dios” (Romanos 3:23).

Sí, todos somos pecadores, y se acerca el día en que “cada uno de nosotros dará a Dios cuenta de sí mismo” (Romanos 14:12). En ese día, ¿estarás a la altura? Podemos saber esto con certeza, porque Dios ya ha declarado lo que se requiere: “El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna; pero el que no obedece al Hijo no verá la vida, sino que la ira de Dios permanece sobre él” (Juan 3:36).

¿Por qué es tan importante que creamos (pongamos nuestra confianza) en Jesús? Porque Dios ha dejado en claro que el perdón de los pecados no se basa en lo que nosotros hacemos por Él, sino que se basa totalmente en lo que Él ha hecho por nosotros.

El regalo de la vida eterna fue comprado cuando Jesús, el sacrificio sin pecado, murió en la cruz por nuestros pecados (Romanos 6:23). Ahora Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos y ofrece perdón y vida nueva a todos los que se acercan a Él con un corazón arrepentido y confían en Él como su Salvador.

Aquí es donde el verdadero significado de la Navidad se hace evidente. La Navidad se trata del gran amor de Dios por nosotros y del regalo invaluable que nos ofrece a todos.

Si nunca has hecho de Jesús tu Salvador, simplemente da los tres pasos siguientes: Admite tu necesidad de un Salvador, cree que Jesús murió por ti, y clama a Él. ¡Él te salvará!

“Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que dio a Su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que cree en Él, no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna” (Juan 3:16).
