Have you ever heard the word “Gospel” and wondered just what it meant?
“Gospel” comes from a Greek word which, literally translated, means “good news.” The gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
The Bible defines the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 “I declare unto you the gospel … by which also ye are saved … how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
So, the gospel is the good news of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for your sins, by which you can have eternal life if you accept him by faith. We must all come to the realization that we shall one day face death. Will you have eternal life and live forever in Heaven with God (be saved), or will you suffer the penalty for your sins and spend eternity in a place of torment called Hell (be lost)?
In Acts 16:30, a very important question was asked. “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The simple answer was given in the following verse: “… Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”
The Bible tells us that “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Every one of us has fallen short of God’s standard of perfection, because we have sinned against God. We deserve to be judged and punished for that sin. However, God loves you so much that He was willing to bear the penalty for your sins, and the sins of the whole world, as He shed his own blood and died on the cross. He paid the price so that you can receive God’s gift of salvation. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
How do I receive this gift, you may ask.
God’s Word tells us that, “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). All you must do is go to God in prayer, believing that Jesus died and rose again for you. Confess to Him that you know you are a sinner in need of His forgiveness and accept this gift by faith. God will save you by his grace if you will call upon his name (Ephesians 2:8-9 / Romans 10:13).
Proverbs 14:12 says that “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” It matters not what man says, but what God says. Jesus said, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
No one can save you but him! Salvation is a gift of God freely offered to you by his grace, but like any gift, it must be accepted to be called “mine.” Will you pray and receive this gift today?
