“If you knew the gift of God, and who is the One saying to you, Give Me to drink, you would have asked Him …” John 4:10
The woman to whom Jesus spoke these words had come to the well to draw water. As a despised Samaritan she was considered an outcast by society; not worthy of anyone’s time or attention. She had been married five times and was now living with a man outside of marriage. Yet Jesus spoke to her as if he knew her and cared for her.
It is to such a one that Jesus holds out the offer of the water of life. Has your life been filled with failure, broken relationships, abandonment and despair? Do you feel hopeless about ever finding joy or purpose in life? The words Jesus spoke to this woman are the same words He speaks to you now:
“If you knew the gift of God…”
Perhaps you regard Jesus as some historical figure with little relevance to your life. You might know Him in some religious persuasion. You may even think of Him with fear or trepidation because of the circumstances in which you find yourself. Yet Jesus speaks:
“If you knew the gift”.
Jesus Christ is the gift of God. The Son of God is offered, regardless of our merit or our lot in life. Countless others have discovered the power of His resurrection and the ability to rise from every form of addiction and despair.
“For a Child is born; to us a Son is given; and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
The true knowledge of God removes our separation from Him. The Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well went away rejoicing in her newfound freedom.
This “living water” awaits all who come to Him in truth and brokenness of heart. He does not withhold His hand from those who come to Him in hope.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:17
Whether you can relate to the woman at the well, lost in sin, or the prodigal son who found himself living in a pigsty, far away from his father’s house, the gift of God offers forgiveness, freedom and light. Your heaviness of heart, despair, and sorrow are invitations to the love and power of God.
“Come to Me, all those laboring and being burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
