In today’s culture, many seem to have openly embraced the idea that people are inherently good—that humans are born with “hearts of gold.” For instance, people will often say, “I have my faults, but at the bottom, I have a good heart.” Or they’ll deploy the disclaimer: “I’m not the greatest saint, but deep down I have a good heart.”

However, this idea stands in stark contrast to the biblical view. Such assertions are found to be void when held underneath the scrutiny of God’s Word.

What the Bible Says About the Hearts of Men

God’s Word: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” 1 “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” 2 “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.” 3

For the cancer patient, news of a terminal diagnosis is sometimes hard to swallow, but that’s still not an excuse to dismiss it. To live in denial of that would be fatally tragic.

Likewise, the Bible doesn’t pull any punches when it speaks to man’s true state before God. However, most refuse to come to grips with the soul-humbling truths of Scripture. Instead, they choose to endanger their souls by believing catchy maxims such as: “just follow your heart.”

Is this you? Have you fallen prey to this hollow myth? Do you really think your heart has a better grasp on reality than God? A heart born in sin & exceedingly prone to error?

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool (Proverbs 28:26, NASB).

Nobody in their right mind would play Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun. However, friend, this is your current absurdity—rejecting God’s truth in favor of your heart is the height of foolishness.

“The foolishness of man ruins his way, And his heart rages against the LORD (Proverbs 19:3, NASB).

Friend, I think we’ve found the root problem. You have a heart that is in rebellion against God!

I beg you this hour to drop your weapons & direct your gaze towards the bleeding Savior at Calvary. Look at Jesus as He hung in the place of ruined sinners. View His body throbbing under the immense weight of sin! See His heart brimming over with love to redeem sinners like you! Though your rebellion deserves God’s eternal justice in hell, Jesus redirected God’s wrath onto Himself! He lovingly volunteered to suffer & die in your place, if only you would but repent & trust in Him. After 3 days, Jesus rose from the dead to give those who trust in Him everlasting life. Surrender to His incomparable love now before it’s too late!

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
