Q. Individuals have many different responses to this question ranging from “no, God does not love me,” “I just do not care about this kind of question,” “there is no God,” “who or what is God?” to “yes, of course God loves me.” Isn’t that true?

A. I know it is true that God offers His love to the whole world as He declares in His Word, the Bible:

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

I also know it is true that God’s love is qualified, as He declares in His Word, the Bible:

The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but He loves him who pursues righteousness. Proverbs 15:9

Q. But I am not wicked. I am basically a good person. Surely the good I have done far outweighs the bad I have done in my life. This verse does not apply to me … does it?

A. God declares in His Word, the Bible, that we are all wicked sinners who stand guilty before Him. By God’s standard of righteousness even the best person is looked upon by Him as a sinner on his way to Hell. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23

The soul that sins, it shall die. Ezekiel 18:20

Q. I just do not believe it. If God says I am such a wicked person, what will He do to me?

A. The Bible teaches that at the end of this world’s existence all the wicked will come under eternal punishment in a place called Hell. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

For a fire is kindled in my anger,
And shall burn unto the lowest Hell,
And shall consume the earth with her increase,
And set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
Deuteronomy 32:22

Q. I just do not believe Hell is a real place after death for people like me. Things may be getting pretty bad in the world today and might be getting a little bit worse than I know, but one thing I do know is that I am really not that bad a person and I certainly am not going to Hell like all these other wicked people in the world who deserve whatever they get coming to them. Do you understand what I mean?

A. What I understand is that when the Bible talks about Hell it means that it is a very real place and things are that bad for every individual who has lived upon this planet. The Bible makes many references to Hell, noting that it is a real place, which consists of unending suffering and torment.

So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:49-50

…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

Q. I just do not believe that kind of nonsense. It makes no sense. Why would a loving God create a Hell of everlasting destruction?

A. Hell exists because God created every individual to be personally accountable to Him for his own actions. God’s perfect justice demands payment for all our sins. Every individual must give an account for every sinful word, thought and deed which he has ever done throughout his lifetime. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad. 2 Corinthians 5:10

But I say to you, that every idle word which men shall speak, they shall give account of in the day of judgment. Matthew 12:36

Q. Does this mean that I will be judged and then sent to Hell for what I have said and done?

A. Yes. This means that at the end of this world’s existence every individual who has ever lived upon this planet will be brought to life and stand for judgment before God. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

Because He has appointed a day, in which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man who He has ordained; and of this He has given assurance to all, by raising Him from the dead. Acts 17:31

Q. Who is ‘that Man’ who He has ordained and what is the assurance He has given?

A. ‘That Man’ who God has ordained is the Lord Jesus Christ, who the Bible declares is fully God and fully man. The assurance God has given is the absolutely reliable historical record found only in the Bible regarding His life and ministry which includes His death, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead. Christ took upon Himself all our sin as God in order that we might be made righteous before God. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Q. What does this mean when it says I might become the righteousness of God in Him?

A. What it means is that if you trust in Christ to bear all your sins, then it is as if you have already stood before the judgment seat of God. You shall not come into judgment for God has judged all your sin in Christ. You will never have to pay the price for your own sin by spending an eternity in Hell. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. John 5:24

Q. But what does it mean to believe in Him? If I agree with what the Bible says about Christ, then am I saved from going to Hell?

A. Believing on Christ means a whole lot more than simply agreeing in your mind with the truths of the Bible. It means that you hang your whole life on Him. It means that you entrust your entire being to the truths of the Bible, since it is God’s rulebook and final authority for following Him. It means that you repent, that is, you turn away from your sins and serve Christ as your Lord. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

Repent therefore and be converted, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19

Q. Are you telling me that there is no other way to escape Hell except through Jesus Christ? Are you telling me that all the followers of all the other religions in the world will go to Hell?

A. Yes. God holds us accountable for our sins. God demands that we pay for our sins. All the other religions of the world cannot provide a substitute for the sins of their followers. Christ is the only one who satisfies God to bear our sins. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

Q. So what must I do if I do not want to go to Hell?

A. You must completely throw yourself on the mercy of God for He is the only one who can save you from your sins. If you see your hopeless condition as a sinner on your way to Hell, then cry out to God that He will save you. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! Luke 18:13

For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Romans 10:13

Q. But how can I believe on Christ if I know so little about Him or the Bible?

A. God not only can save you through the Lord Jesus Christ, but He also gives you the faith to believe on Him. You can pray to God that He will give you faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

God works through His Word, the Bible, to give you that faith. If you really mean business with God to turn away from your sin and trust in Christ as your Savior, you will use every opportunity to hear and read the Bible which is the only Word of God. God declares in His Word, the Bible:

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17

Q. But does this mean I have to surrender everything to God?

A. Yes. The Lord Jesus Christ wants you to come to Him in total abandonment, absolutely brokenhearted, altogether crushed in spirit, surrendering everything to follow Him.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

And He [that is, Jesus] said to all, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23

Because we are sinners who love to follow our own sins we must pray to God for an intense hatred to turn from the practice of our sins which we cherish so deeply. If we truly desire salvation, we will begin to turn away from our own personal sins as God strengthens us, for we know that our sins are sending us to Hell.

To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities. Acts 3:26

It is my desire that God in His mercy give you His own saving grace and faith to turn away from your sins and trust only in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, so that you may receive deliverance from an eternity in Hell and everlasting life with Him in Heaven.
