WHO is Jesus?

When you hear the name Jesus, you may think of His name as commonplace from hearing it so often. Perhaps you have heard His name used in church, maybe as a curse word; or this may be the first time.

So who is this Jesus? The Bible shows that Jesus is a Prophet, a Teacher, a Man, etc. The Bible also declares that He is the Son of God. Now the fact that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God made the Jews very angry. In Jewish culture when someone claimed to be the Son of God, they claimed to be equal with God—which meant that they were claiming to be, in fact, God Himself. Nevertheless, Jesus’ claim is true. Jesus is both 100% man and 100% God.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
— John 1:14 “I and my Father are one.” — John 10:30 “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” — John 5:18

SO, how does this affect me?

Now you may be thinking: “So what? How does this even relate to my life? Why do I need to know any of this?” Well, as we continue to look at who Jesus is, the Bible also declares that He is the Saviour of mankind.

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” — Luke 19:10

Now, if someone needs a Saviour (which is a deliverer), this means that there is something that people need saving from. What does mankind need to be saved from? Simply put, sin. Sin means to miss the mark, to fall short of God’s standard. Jesus became a man so that He could redeem mankind. “For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them .” — Luke 9:56a

The Bible talks about how we are all “… dead in trespasses and sins;” — Ephesians 2:1b “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” — Romans 5:12

Perhaps you have told a lie before, became angry at someone, or broken the law (speeding anyone?). These are examples of sin. The Bible teaches that everyone has sinned, which includes myself, and you as well. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” — Romans 3:23

Now, the Bible also tells us that “the wages of sin is death;” — Romans 6:23a. Death is separation, and there is a real place that people go after they physically die called Hell. God made this place for the devil and his angels: “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” — Matthew 25:41b.

God does not desire mankind to go there. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9

The dilemma is that sin cannot enter heaven. God is holy; and since you are a sinner and unholy, you can’t go. You need your sin debt removed, and baptism or good works just don’t cut it. (See Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 11:6; Titus 3:5).

So here is the predicament. You can’t do anything to save yourself, and because you’re a sinner you’re headed to a place called Hell. How do you receive salvation?

EVERlasting life

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14:6 Jesus is the way of Salvation. God took upon Himself your sins and paid your sin debt and died in your place so that you don’t have to die. Salvation is found in the Person of Christ. He became your substitute willingly.

This is the great news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” — 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

He loves you and offers you salvation as a gift. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8-9

He offers this gift to whosoever … this includes you!

“Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Acts 20:21

Would you like to be saved from your sins and the penalty of death? You can be. Confess to God that you are a sinner and realize that you deserve to die and go to a place called Hell. Realize that Christ died for you and paid your sin debt. Repent (a change of mind that leads to a change of action), and in faith ask Jesus to forgive  you and save you from your sins. It is a matter of the heart and not just a prayer that you say.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” — Romans 10:9-10

Whosoever comes to Him, He promises to not cast out. “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” — John 6:37b “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Romans 10:13
