Who Discovered Light?
Case study of A man born blind
The Light Around Us
Light comes from different sources: natural and artificial.
• Natural lights are the sun, moon and stars, which give light to the earth we live in.
• Artificial lights are electric, candles, lamps, etc.
I am grateful for the man who discovered electric light after trying and failing 1,000 times. Thomas Edison, kudos to you for not giving up!
The Story of a Man Born Blind
I know a story of a man born blind, and I imagined what life would have been like for him and for his parents. No parent or child deserves to be in such a situation. In science, when something happens at birth away from the normal, it is called congenital malformation, with no known cause or treatment.
I am sure the parents would have wondered what caused this, why their precious one was born that way, or blame themselves for what they could not control, or even felt they had done something to deserve this. Even as the child grew, he would have had many questions, but not any answers.
Education or Knowledge Doesn’t Bring Light
They often say education or knowledge brings light. This “light” is a metaphor for understanding. But while this man might have received knowledge, his eyes would still be in darkness.
Neither education, the sun, nor any manmade light could bring this man light. Thomas Edison wouldn’t have been able to help him, nor the best eye doctor in the world.
A Life in Darkness
Living in physical darkness is not fun at all. Imagine all the things the man would have missed out on. Would he have been able to have a vision for his life – goals and aspirations? As the adage says, “There is light at the end of the tunnel,” but this man had none since birth, and no hope of being able to see…
Until he met a man who healed him of his blindness.
The True Light
Jesus said in John 9:5: “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
If this man had not met Jesus Christ, he would have died without physical sight, and much more – he would have had a life without the light of truth.
When Jesus healed him, the man had both physical sight and a new understanding of Jesus’ power and compassion: “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” John 9:25
True illumination, enlightenment and knowledge come not from education or the physical eyes, but from Jesus Christ.
Jesus is “the true light that gives light to everyone…” John 1:9
Jesus’ life is the light that gives your life illumination. He is the express image of God’s glory. The gospel of Jesus Christ is light which shines through a person’s mind to give the knowledge of God.
The World is in Darkness
The whole world is in spiritual darkness, and any life without Jesus Christ is in spiritual darkness. Sin is what brings darkness into one’s life.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2
“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5
“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” John 3:19-21
Take A Step Into The Light
Q: Are you living in darkness?
Jesus Christ can give you the light of life.
Q: Do you have the light of life in you,
or darkness?
Like the man born blind, all of us are born blind spiritually and have an appointment with the darkness of death. Jesus Christ gives us an open invitation to receive Him. Step into the light and find eternal life in Him.
“You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you…” John 12:35a
Will you receive Jesus’ open invitation today to take a step towards Him, out of the darkness and into His light?
“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46
Come to Jesus today, and He will give your life light, for He is Jesus Christ – the way, truth and life (John 14:6).
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, as the man born blind did.
“Do you believe in the Son of Man?” John 9:35
JESUS CHRIST IS THE LIGHT OF LIFE
“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”
John 12:46
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
