The Black Plague in Europe killed more than 20 million people in just five years, 1347-1352. In 1918, the Spanish Flu claimed 50 million lives. HIV/AIDS has killed 25 million as of 2011. The Ebola virus killed 11,310 people in the 2015-2016 outbreak.
What if I told you there was a plague worse than those mentioned above? A plague that is responsible for the death of every man, woman, boy and girl who has ever lived?
What if I told you this disease was undetectable by man or machine and that you contracted it the moment of your conception? What if I told you that you and everyone you know is infected? Would you want the cure? What price would you pay? What if I told you that the cure was free? All you had to do was ask for it from the only person who had the cure. What if I told you that the only way to obtain the cure was for one person to die? What if this person’s blood was the only cure to this terrible plague and that this person was willing to make such a sacrifice for you?
Now I want you to realize that this is not an imaginary scenario, it’s real … let me explain.
In 1 Kings 8:38, the Bible talks about the plague of man’s heart—this plague is sin. Sin is responsible for all death in the world. Romans 5:12—“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Adam (the first man ever created) sinned and his sin was passed on to all of his descendants—that includes you and me. We are all sinners and we carry this plague of all plagues inside our hearts. We are born sinful Psalm 51:5—“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” There is no way for us to cure ourselves. No amount of soap and water can wash away this disease and there is no man-made antidote.
But there is a cure. 1 John 1:7—“... the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” You may ask, “Who is this Jesus Christ, and how can His blood cleanse me from sin?” Well, Jesus Christ is God born in human flesh for the sole purpose of dying for your sin. You see, God is holy—that means He is perfect and without sin. Because He is holy, God hates sin and He is angry with sinners for their sin. Psalm 7:11—“God is angry with the wicked everyday.” Because God hates sin He has prepared a place to punish those who sin. Genesis 6:5-6—“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” Romans 3:23—“… all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
God’s holiness demands justice for our sin. The place that God created to punish sinners is called Hell and the Lake of Fire. Those who go there are tormented in flame for all eternity—there is no getting out, there is no parole, it is forever.
But you see while God is Holy, He is also merciful. Psalm 86:15—“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” Because God is merciful He doesn’t want us to go to Hell. Ezekiel 18:32—“For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.” Because He doesn’t want us to go to Hell He provided a way of escape.
He Himself came to earth and died as a man in our place, He made the payment that His justice demanded for sin. Jesus Christ purchased salvation for us because we couldn’t do it ourselves. God gave us a choice: accept His free gift of salvation purchased with His own blood or reject it and you pay the price for your sin yourself in Hell for eternity.
Now I want you to understand something else: it is your fault that He died. Now you will say, “I wasn’t there! I didn’t nail Him to the cross.” While that may be true in a literal way, it was your sin that crucified Christ—it was your sin that nailed Him to the tree. It was you that killed an innocent man, that killed God in human form because it was your sin that made His death necessary.
God teaches in the Bible that to be saved from Hell you must repent and believe. In your heart admit that you are a sinner. Ask God for mercy and forgiveness. Throw away all thoughts that you can earn salvation through works, and trust Christ and His sacrifice for you. Acts 3:19—“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out …” Acts 16:31—“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” It is not just a mental acknowledgement that these facts are true—God will open your spiritual eyes and show you the sins of your heart and life, and you must put your trust in Jesus Christ to save you.
The Lord Jesus gave an example of a man who got saved and this was how it happened: he “would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner”—Luke 18:13. This man saw his sin, felt his guilt, saw his doom, realized the plague of all plagues lived in his heart and it humbled him. He repented of his sins and confessed that he himself was a sinner by nature and by choice. After this man prayed the Lord Jesus reported, “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted”—Luke 18:14. The Lord Jesus proclaimed this man justified. This man was born again, he was cleansed from his sins by Christ’s blood.
Isaiah 1:18—“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” When Christ washes you, your sin is forgiven and your life changes. You desire God, not sin. You are born again, in righteousness and true holiness. You become a new creature. “… old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”—2 Corinthians 5:17. There is joy and peace and newness of life. You will have found what has been missing in your heart and life and you will be whole. God was missing because there was a plague of sin in your heart. Christ wants to save you. But if you will not repent and turn from your sin to Jesus, then the plague of plagues will take you to the grave and to Hell beyond.
Repent of your sins, ask God’s forgiveness, trust Christ as your Savior and be cleansed from this plague of sin today. 2 Corinthians 6:2—“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” You may not have another opportunity.
