James Bond, Secret Agent

Ian Fleming, a British author, journalist, and former naval intelligence officer, wrote over a dozen successful books about a fictional character named James Bond, which was his centerpiece.

Bond was a ‘fictional’ government spy and secret agent for Britain whose code name was “007.” He traveled around the globe under many different personalities and he had various job descriptions, but very few knew that Bond was a spy. (With the exception of the enemy, which proved that he couldn’t fool everyone.)

James Bond was just your normal, wealthy, dashing, well-dressed womanizer who drove expensive and unique automobiles (tongue-in-cheek of course).

Christian, Secret agent?

Many who make the claim of being “followers of Christ” or “Christians” (Acts 11:26), live their lives daily without the world suspecting who they are or what they stand for, either. They blend into this world like a blade of grass on one’s lawn. I have heard it said, “If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”

Jesus told us to “let your light so shine before men” but sadly, many are acting like “secret agents” or “007” Christians. It is difficult to be a light when we put our “light under a bushel.”

When we “received” Jesus (John 1:12) we surrendered our lives to Him and He sealed the Holy Spirit within each one of us (2 Corinthians 1:22). “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (Acts 1:8a).

Our service to the Lord is continual until we breathe our last breath on this earth.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:13, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

We never want to lose our savor when it comes to the Lord. I cannot find anywhere in the Bible when we “retire” from spreading the gospel. A true witness delivereth souls (Proverbs 14:25a) and we were chosen to be soldiers (2 Timothy 2:4). We serve the greatest General in all of the universe, Jesus Christ. He gave us our final orders while on this earth: “Preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

As soldiers, we will do that. I pray that none of you are secret agents, or a “007” Christian. When it comes to spreading His Gospel, Jesus does not want us to “sneak around” and hide under “cloak and dagger” as a secret agent would.
