Terrorism. We hear of another attack. More people wounded or even killed. The Prime Minister warned that it was part of a “new trend.” These horrifying acts of violence startle us no doubt, but how exactly should we respond?

Here are some statistics to calm your nerves:

• You are three times more likely to be struck by lightning than be killed in a terrorist attack

• Bees and wasps have caused as many deaths in the UK as terrorism in the past decade, an independent watchdog has found

“The hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” ¹

Whilst speaking to his close followers, Jesus was more than likely referring to their impending persecution because many of these men were brutally murdered during their missionary endeavours. But this warning of Jesus is bang up to date! Extremists have put fear in the hearts of people all over the world. These terrorists are driven either by their strong political allegiances, their interpretation of sacred writings, or both.

Interestingly, an ex-terrorist living in the first century wrote the following: “Formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief.” ²

This changed man was so inspired by the testimony of Jesus and his followers that he wrote these words: “Overcome evil with good.” ³
This simple yet unnatural formula is expressed perfectly in the supernatural work of Jesus on the cross. The Bible says that,

“while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ⁴

Perhaps you would lay down your life for a friend. Jesus willingly laid down his life for his enemies. There were those at the execution scene who mocked Jesus whilst he hung naked upon the cross, but his response was this: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” ⁵ Still today, the name of Jesus Christ is used as a curse word by many people and yet Jesus died for them too. He gave his life even though he knew many would reject his love. His mission was clear: Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. His love is timeless and unconditional. He wants to save you!

When we hear of these terrorist attacks, our first reaction may be to get angry, hate the perpetrators and perhaps even plot revenge. But Jesus presented an incredibly countercultural view when he said … “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” ⁶ These stark words may provoke a sense of injustice amongst us, nevertheless, Jesus practiced what he preached. He longs for you to accept his gift of love and forgiveness.

I would urge you to investigate the claims of Jesus. Listen to his testimony. Look to Jesus. There is no greater love. There is no greater sacrifice.
