Jesus Christ came as a Beacon of Hope to a lost and dying world.

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).

“…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Before Jesus Christ came I was…

Lost.

Dying.

Without hope.

Alone, without God in the world.

In darkness.

“But if our gospel [good news that Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross, was buried, and rose again to pay the penalty for your sin and mine] be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world [Satan] hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

“…[At] that time ye were without Christ…having no hope, and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12).

I WAS LOST.

He came as a Shepherd.

He came to restore me.

He came to bring me back to God.

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him [Jesus Christ] the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (Psalm 23:1-3).

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:19-21).

I WAS DYING.

He came as a Saviour.

He came to give me eternal life.

He came to rescue me from sin and its consequences (death).

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

“And she [Mary] shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:16-19).

“Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” (Romans 5:8-9).

I WAS WITHOUT HOPE.

He came as my Refuge, the One on whom I can depend in times of trouble.

He came to give me purpose.

He came to give me direction.

“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder” (Psalm 107:8-14).

“The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee” (Psalm 9:9-10).

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24).

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Psalm 16:11).

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).

I WAS ALONE, WITHOUT GOD IN THE WORLD.

He came to be rejected by men.

He came to be forsaken of God.

He came that I might be adopted into God’s family, enjoying His presence forever; never alone, never forsaken.

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted” (Isaiah 53:3-4).

God’s Son, Jesus, cried out from the cross: “…My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34).

“He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:10-13).

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…” (1 John 3:1).

God the Father “…predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:5-7).

Jesus promised, “…lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:20).

He said, “…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).

I WAS IN DARKNESS.

He came to “lighten my darkness” and bring me to God.

“For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness” (2 Samuel 22:29).

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened [made alive] by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

REPENT—turn from sin and turn to God.

“…Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15).

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

BELIEVE—believe the gospel.

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also…” (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

This was the question the keeper of the prison asked Paul and Silas in Acts 16:30.

BELIEVE—believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31).

BELIEVE—believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Anointed One), the Son of God, “King Of Kings, And Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:16).

“And he [Jesus] hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords” (Revelation 19:16).

“Jesus said unto her [Martha], I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world” (John 11:25-27).

BELIEVE—believe that Jesus Christ is THE ONLY WAY to God the Father and eternal life.

“Jesus saith unto him [Thomas], I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5:12).

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…” (Titus 3:5).

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags…” (Isaiah 64:6).

“…[The] blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).

“In whom [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God…” (Colossians 1:14-15).

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

CONFESS—declare Jesus Christ to be your Lord (Master) and your only Saviour from sin and its penalty, death.

“…The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:8-10).

“And when he [Jesus] had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:34-38).

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

CALL—ask the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to forgive your sin and save your soul from hell. Ask Him to be your Saviour and Lord and give you eternal life with Him.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

REPENT. BELIEVE. CONFESS. CALL.

The thief who died at the time of Christ’s crucifixion received Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Luke 23 gives us the account:

“And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him [Jesus], saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss [Evidence of repentance: The thief agreed with God concerning his sin and recognized Jesus to be without sin.]. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom [Evidence of faith or belief: He believed in Jesus, His power over death, His Kingship, and His kingdom. He confessed Jesus as His “Lord” and recognized Jesus’ ability to save him from eternal punishment and separation from God. He then called upon Him, asking entrance into His kingdom.]. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:39-43).

May you repent of your sin, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and His Gospel (good news of His death, burial, and resurrection), confess God’s Son Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, and call upon His name today! Trust God to “[deliver you] from the power of darkness” and to “[translate you] into the kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13)! —Donna L. Ferguson
