Have you ever noticed the beauty of a rainbow? Have you ever asked yourself, “Where did the rainbow come from?” God made the rainbow as a promise to mankind that He would never again destroy the entire earth with a flood.
“I do set My bow in the cloud … and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you … and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh” (Genesis 9:13-15).
We can believe that there will never be another worldwide flood because God promised. God cannot lie, nor change His mind. Hebrews 6:18 proves this, “That by two immutable [unchanging] things, in which it was impossible for God to lie….” What God says will come to pass. Has there ever been a worldwide flood since He placed His bow in the cloud? The answer is no, and there never will be.
God’s inability to lie could mean life or death for you because of two other promises that he has made to all men.
A Promise of Judgment
“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). It’s a promise from the unchanging God. Remember, God cannot lie. If you die without having your sins forgiven, you will spend eternity in hell, because all people are sinners. “There is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not” (Ecclesiastes 7:20). Because of sin, God has promised that if we die without forgiveness, we will burn in the Lake of Fire for all eternity.
A Promise of Forgiveness and Life
Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). God has promised it! If you change your mind and heart about your sin and turn to God, He has promised a way of salvation through His sinless Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus, being fully God and fully man, died on a cross in your place, and for your sin. “…His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree”(1 Peter 2:24). He then rose from the dead to live forever. We can have forgiveness of sins and eternal life by simply trusting in Jesus Christ as our Savior, and in nothing else.
The same God that said “depart from Me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:23) has also said “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9-10). Are you willing to humble yourself before God and ask Him to save you from your sin? Do you believe that He cannot lie about punishing sin, and that He also cannot lie about forgiveness of sin through His Son Jesus?
What’s holding you back? Is it your taste for sin? It was man’s love of sin that brought God’s wrath upon man in the form of a worldwide flood, and sin will destroy you as well. “…Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15).
God, who cannot lie, loves you and wants to save you from your sin. Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26).
Dear friend, God does not change. “For I am the Lord, I change not…” (Malachi 3:6). He is the same God today as He was when He gave us His rainbow. God’s unchanging nature can mean one of two things to you; it can mean your damnation in Hell if you reject Christ, or it can mean your everlasting salvation if you humble your heart and believe that Jesus Christ can save you. Won’t you ask Jesus to save you today? “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
The next time you see a rainbow, what will it mean to you: life or death?
