There are two primary scientific models proposed to explain the existence of the universe and the vibrant array of life found on the earth. They are the creation model and the evolution model. Which one is true? Which one does the evidence support?
First of all, what is evidence? Evidence is things like fossil dinosaur bones, rock layers, scientific measurements, and observations which provide many different and interesting pieces of information. But we must remember that these pieces of information by themselves do not tell the whole story. It is the interpretation of the evidence and the way it is applied to one’s preferred scientific model that ultimately gives meaning to the information. Just like two competing attorneys can take the same evidence and present two different stories to a jury, so can much of the scientific evidence regarding origins be equally fitted to either creation or evolution. In the end, though, only one explanation can be true. Let’s briefly examine these two models.
The creation model reflects what is said in the Bible, which claims to be God’s inerrant Word. It states that God created the universe and all that is in it. The Bible then tells us how sin and death entered the world, and how God later judged the earth with a worldwide flood.
The evolution model states that billions of years ago, through random, undirected forces, the universe formed itself, and then life formed from non-life and then, over millions of years, evolved into more complex forms.
Granted, there are different schools of thought among both creationists and evolutionists, but taking a broad view, these two basic models are used as a framework for interpreting and applying the evidence that scientists in many different fields of study have been unearthing in one form or another for hundreds of years.
It is my belief that the various pieces of scientific evidence best fit the Biblical model of creation. There are many thousands of fully-qualified, hard-working scientists worldwide who agree on this point. (See the back page for a website address where you can find links to some of their up-to-date research.)
To give just one example, let’s think for a minute about DNA. Perhaps the biggest problem with evolution is the vastly enormous amount of genetic information found in even a “simple” cell, and the idea that this information originated randomly and then accumulated to produce more complex life forms. One might as well believe that millions of ink molecules randomly arranged themselves to produce these words. Even if they could, these words are not only words—they convey information that demands that an author exists, just as the information found on the DNA molecule demands that an intelligent Creator must exist.
I believe this leads us into one of the reasons why so many people want evolution to be true—evolution removes the need for a Creator and any possibility of their personal responsibility to Him. Well, I have some bad news and some good news for those folks. The bad news is that they are responsible to their Creator. The good news is that He loves them very much and has gone to great lengths to express that love!
The Bible, which tells us the truth about the past, also tells us the truth about our present and our future. It says that we “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23) and that sinners are destined for eternal judgment in the “lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). Is there any hope for our future? Praise God there is! “God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ, God’s own Son, died on the cross and rose again to provide the way for all of our sins to be washed away so we can spend eternity with Him.
How can you come to know the Creator? Stop running from Him; turn to Him, confessing your sins, and trusting Jesus Christ as your Saviour based on what He has done for you. (Read John 3 and Romans 5 for more information.) You will meet the Creator someday. You can either come to know Him now as your Saviour, or face Him later as your Judge. –T. Don Johnson
