The Faith Journey

My chopper went down well behind enemy lines. I was wounded but alive. No one else survived.

I’ve got to get out of here, but I can barely move.

A young girl on a scooter suddenly appeared.

I didn’t know if I could trust her. The enemy had been known to infiltrate young families in local villages.

You come quickly! They be here soon.

I had no choice. If I waited I would be captured or killed within minutes.

Wincing in pain I lifted myself onto the back of the scooter.

They young girl took off like a rocket. She really knew how to handle that scooter.

Somehow through the jungle foliage she could see the trail hidden beneath her wheels.

On we went. I could see nothing but leaves.

I had no idea where we were, where we came from, or where we were going.

It was all I could manage just to hang on and try to forget my pain.

Suddenly the girl came to an abrupt stop on the edge of a cliff.

She pointed across a deep ravine to anther cliff about a hundred yards away.

How do I get across?

You get off. You walk!

Take bridge.

What bri… oh my!

I looked down and saw a tattered rope bridge. On the bottom were planks of wood lashed together end to end. These planks were about the width of a scooter tire.

I ride over. You walk. Safety over there!

I had no doubt she could drive across these planks. In fact, she probably did it several times a week.

But there was no way I could get across this bridge on my own. Even if I wasn’t wounded, I’d still probably plunge to my death if I tried to walk this.

You go or you die.

I can’t make it.

We could both hear the jungle noises from the enemy approaching.

Rustle, rustle, rustle

With a look of resolve in her eyes, the young girl said…

Okay, I take you! Get on…but you no move!

Before, I believed she could ride that scooter across. I had watched how she navigated the trails through the dense jungle.

But now, believing she could do it while I was on the scooter with her took us both to a new level of faith.

You no move!

Believe me, there was no way I was going to move. I was frozen on the back of that scooter.

She calmly took off like it was a joy ride in the country. The wheels bounced at every place the planks were lashed together, but her scooter never wavered.

We eventually made it to the other side.

You safe now.

How did you do that? Weren’t you scared?

I keep eyes on goal. Then no problem.

Moral:

Two things can be learned here:

1) True faith involves commitment. Believing something is possible takes on a new meaning when you have to ride on the back of a scooter over a tattered rope bridge covering a deep ravine.

Jesus invited His disciples to deepen their commitment to Him when He said,

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23).

They thought they were ready, but when Jesus was arrested, they scattered.

2) When we keep our eyes on the goal we have a much better chance of success. The world is full of distractions trying to keep us from where we need to go. The young girl on the scooter would have most likely been met with certain doom if she took her eyes off her goal and looked down into the ravine below.

Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. (Prov 4:25).

As you walk with the Lord, commit yourself to set aside your fears, deepen your trust in Christ, and keep your eyes on eternity.
