Rest in peace is a phrase we hear all the time when someone dies, but how do you know for sure you will get to rest in peace when you take your final breath?
We will all die at some point. Most people believe that if they are a good person, or do good things for others here on earth that their actions will be enough to make it to heaven and rest in peace. Unfortunately no one is good enough to go to heaven, no matter how nice or how many good things they might do. God says that “all men have sinned and have missed the shining-greatness of God” (Romans 3:23).
It doesn’t matter if we have committed “small” sins like lying, stealing, and cheating, or “great” sins like murder—we are all guilty, condemned sinners. If we die before our sins are forgiven, we will be separated from God forever, and will never “rest in peace.”
There is good news, though! God knew we would sin, and because he loves us so much he sent His son Jesus—who was perfectly sinless—to suffer the penalty of sin in our place. He died on the cross to pay for all our sins, great and small, so we could be forgiven, saved, and spend eternity with Him in heaven.
God made you, loves you, and has a plan for your life no matter how many mistakes you’ve made. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, trust Him to be your Saviour, and let him be the Lord of your life. He wants to start a personal relationship with you so He can help you in your life right now.
You can start that new life with him by recognizing that you need the salvation offered by Jesus. Acknowledge that He died for you and rose again, paying the price you could never pay. God’s forgiveness is not based on your actions, but His actions of dying and paying for your sin’s penalty. Trust Him—and Him alone—to take you to heaven when you die. You might want to express your heart’s desire in a prayer like this:
“God, thank you for sending Jesus to pay the price for all my sins, I trust the sacrifice He made for me. I ask you to forgive me and wash me clean of my sins. Come into my life and save me, making me a new person in You.”
If you have put your trust in Jesus, God has forgiven you, saved you, and you’re now His child forever! You will now have the peace of knowing your sins are forgiven and will “rest in peace” for eternity because you get to spend it with God.
Get a Bible and start reading and learning about Him. Get into a local church with others who can help you know more about His love for you. You can also pray to Him anytime, anywhere, about anything because He loves and cares for you!
Here Are Some Excellent Bible Verses to Read:
John 3:16 “ God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever puts his trust in God’s Son will not be lost but will have life that lasts forever.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “Christ never sinned but God put our sin on Him. Then we are made right with God because of what Christ has done for us.”
John 14:6 “Jesus said, ‘I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one can go to the Father except by Me.’”
Ephesians 2:8-9 “By His loving-favor you have been saved from the punishment of sin through faith. It is not by anything you have done. It is a gift of God. It is not given to you because you worked for it. If you could work for it, you would be proud.”
Romans 6:23 “You get what is coming to you when you sin. It is death! But God’s free gift is life that lasts forever. It is given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ.”
John 5:24 “For sure, I tell you, anyone who hears My Word and puts his trust in Him Who sent Me has life that lasts forever. He will not be guilty. He has already passed from death into life.”
Romans 10:9-10 “If you say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved from the punishment of sin. When we believe in our hearts, we are made right with God. We tell with our mouth how we were saved from the punishment of sin.”
1 Peter 5:7 “Give all your worries to Him because He cares for you.”
1 Corinthians 2:9 “No eye has ever seen or no ear has ever heard or no mind has ever thought of the wonderful things God has made ready for those who love Him.”
