Is God still the God of miracles? You’d better believe it! My testimony is proof of a miracle of God working in a life!
Thirty-eight years ago I was born into a Roman Catholic family. I took the sacraments of baptism, Holy Communion and confirmation. I went to Sunday School to learn my catechism, I took the Mass, made confession, said the rosary and worshipped and prayed to Mary. When I reached my teens, material things ruled my life. Money and pleasure were my gods. I had rejected what little I had learned about the teachings of Christ. I had come to the conclusion that these principles were impractical, illogical and foolish. I did not believe in the resurrection of Christ, nor His Virgin Birth. I mocked and blasphemed His Name.
At the age of twenty-one, I married a Jewess and we decided to raise our children neutrally, letting them decide when they got older which religion they would choose. This, by the way, is the height of parental irresponsibility. The burden of guilt of sin in my life began to develop slowly and increase year by year. By this time in my life, I had become proficient in applying the principles of the world—lying, cheating, misrepresenting, stealing—and my burden of guilt began to increase. I had no rest. I began searching for a meaning in life. There had to be more to life than materialism and pleasure. One evening after work, tired and exhausted, I sat down to watch TV and suddenly the lights went out. We called the lighting company and we were the only ones on the street without them. We brought out our transistor radio and decided to listen to it. As we turned it on, a Gospel program had just begun. I felt the power of the Holy Spirit pressing me into my chair. During the message, the Holy Spirit began convicting me of my sin and the judgment that was before me. But He promised that if I would repent and turn from my sins and accept, Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of my life, He would give me a new life in Christ Jesus.
That night I believed, and received God’s offer of forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. For the first time in many years I had peace in my soul. I knew that God had forgiven me. I knew that Christ not only saved me from the penalty of sin but also from the power of sin. The Lord gave me a hunger for His Word and a desire to know His perfect will for my life. My wife had heard the same message but rejected it and began actively opposing my new way of life. She threatened to leave me with the children if I did not change. The Lord gave me a verse in Matthew 10:36-37, “And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” My wife left me and tried to have me committed into an institution with the approval of both our families. But, praise God, He delivered me out of their hands. I began to see that the Christian life was not an easy road, and that the Scriptures teach that all those who live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. During my temptations and sufferings, Jesus gave me Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Six weeks after my wife left, I received a telephone call from her stating that she had received Christ and was returning with the family to begin a new life together in Him. Joy filled my heart.
I had decided to return to the Roman Catholic Church but was restrained by the Holy Spirit. He continued to instruct me in the Word and began to reveal to me the erroneous doctrines and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit revealed to me that Christ was our only Savior and that faith and trust in Him alone was all that was necessary for salvation. He also showed me that the Roman Catholic Church had actually usurped the power and authority of God and negated the efficacy of Christ’s atoning blood, and work on Calvary which is the only means of salvation. They have put in its place subjection to the Pope and reliance upon the Catholic sacraments and the doctrine of Mary as Mediatrix between man and God. How wonderful is the grace of God and Jesus’ utterance in John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.” The Lord finally led me to a Bible-believing, Bible-preaching, Christ-honoring, fundamental church with born-again believers.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). With this new life in Christ, I was made aware of my Christian responsibility. The Holy Spirit showed me that He wanted to use this new vessel for His glory, for continuing His saving work on earth in and through me. I willingly surrendered my will to His.
The Lord next led me to Bible school where I trained for His service. Satan tried to hinder me from furthering my Bible training. God gave me Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” and He has. The Lord has promised us an abundant life, and this is my testimony. I can truly say, “My cup runneth over.” He has blessed my home and family and we praise His Holy Name.
If there is one who has not given his heart to Jesus Christ, let me encourage you to do so now! My prayer is that you too might experience for yourself this wonderful saving Grace.
