The Rescue
“Sniff! Sniff! What’s that smell?”
“Oh no! The whole building’s on fire!”
“This office will be engulfed in flames any minute!”
“I’ve got to warn people!”
“Doug! Doug! The building’s on fire!”
“Oh hi, Perry. Say, would you look over this report for me?”
“You don’t understand! We’re going to be engulfed in flames any minute!”
“Uh-huh?”
“We’ve got to get to the helicopter on the roof!”
“Look! I’m busy. Either help me with this or let me do my work.”
“What’s going on here?”
“Oh, Chuck! We’ve got to get out! The building’s on fire!”
“Fire, huh? Well, I don’t notice any fire. I don’t smell anything. You’re just a troublemaker!”
“But the fire is real!”
“You just keep your mouth shut. You’re scaring Ginny here for no reason.”
“Fire?”
“Yes, Ginny, there is a fire, come with me to the roof and we’ll be rescued.”
“Fire?”
“We’re all doomed!”
“No, we’re not. We can be rescued!”
“It’s hopeless!”
“But…”
“Where’s the fire? I’ll take care of it.”
“Oh, Ken. I’m so glad someone here has some sanity.”
“We’ve still got time to get to the roof.”
“Roof? Nah, I’ll take care of the fire with my trusty fire extinguiser.”
“No, you don’t understand. We’re talking about a big fire here.”
“No, you don’t understand!”
“I’ve grown up learning how to be self-reliant for all of my problems and I’m not going to change now.”
“Did you say this is a “big” fire?”
“Oh, yes, Dan, It’s a big fire. We’ve got to hurry.”
“Define “Big.””
“Well...it’s huge! The whole office will be engulfed any minute.”
“Okay. Define “fire.””
“Huh?”
“Let’s sit down and discuss this over coffee.”
“What? This is crazy!”
It sure is! Yet this is also how many people react to the danger of another very real type of fire...that is the eternal fire of hell.
Some people are too busy to notice.
“Huh?”
Others are too offended.
“You rabble rouser!”
Still others have resigned themselves to eternal judgement…
“We’re doomed!”
...while others think they can avoid it by their own efforts.
“I’m ready.”
And yet others are willing to analyze the issue but put off doing anything about it.
“Let’s talk.”
But the Bible makes clear that eternal Hell awaits everyone who has not responded to God’s plan for salvation.
“Gulp-It does?”
“He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus, they will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of His power.” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)
But God doesn’t want us to be doomed to Hell.
“He (God) is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentence.” (2 Peter 3:9)
Out of His great love for us, He sent His son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins, and then conquer death with His resurrection from the grave. He wants us to place our total trust in Him now so we can escape suffering the eternal consequences for our sin and be with Him.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“Place your trust in Jesus now and you will live with Him forever.”
“Dear God, thank you for allowing your son to die for my sins. I now turn from living my life my own way and place my trust in Jesus to be my savior...saving me from the eternal fire of Hell and giving me eternal life with you. Amen.”
