The Desire for Freedom

A famous poem etched at the base of the Statue of Liberty welcomes those who are “yearning to breathe free.” Most of us can easily relate to this passionate desire for the freedom to pursue the kind of lives we want for ourselves and our families.

But even if we live in a free nation, we still struggle to live in the fullness of freedom we were created to enjoy. We’re enslaved by habits, attitudes and past mistakes that leave us weighed down and wondering if it’s even possible to “breathe free.”

A Declaration of Freedom

America’s founding fathers knew the importance of freedom. The Declaration of Independence motivated the colonists to pursue it at all costs.

Many centuries earlier, Jesus declared that spiritual freedom is within reach: “if the Son … shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). He witnessed our struggle and explained that disobedience to God has made us slaves to sin, stealing our freedom and tearing down our families and communities. The Bible goes on to say that “all have sinned” and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 3:23; 6:23).

The cost of Freedom

Flipping through the past 250 years of America’s history, we see that our nation’s independence and the freedoms we enjoy today required battle, bloodshed, and years of struggle. As the saying goes, “freedom is never free.”

In a similar way, our spiritual freedom required action and sacrifice. Our sins demand justice from a Holy God. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, paid the price our sins deserve when He laid down His life on the cross, enduring God’s wrath in our place. “Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).

The battle for our spiritual freedom has been won! Jesus rose triumphantly from the grave to demonstrate His victory over sin and death. God now offers forgiveness and new life to everyone who turns to Him in repentance and trusts completely in the victory that Jesus won on our behalf.

We will all stand before God, the righteous Judge, one day (Hebrews 9:27). Now is the time to take the weight of your guilt and bring it all to Jesus. He paid the price, so you don’t have to. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Living in Freedom

Those who trust Jesus as their Savior will discover many blessings and freedoms as they follow Him. Here are just a few:

  • Freedom to draw near to God and talk to Him through prayer Hebrews 4:16
  • Freedom to walk as a child of God John 1:12
  • Freedom to live free of worry Philippians 4:19
  • Freedom to receive God’s abundant blessings now and for eternity Ephesians 1:3
  • Freedom to enter the gates of Heaven John 14:2-3

Do you know Jesus? He lovingly invites you today, saying “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Through Jesus, you can experience true freedom today and for eternity!
